Important Georgia PSC meeting on Thursday, 9/12.

Please attend if you can!

The Georgia Public Service Commission (Georgia PSC) is set to vote Sept. 17 on Georgia Power’s proposal to burn wood pellets and other organic materials to generate energy. This proposal is much more expensive than investments in solar or battery storage would be, and burning biomass produces carbon emissions and pollution that is harmful to human health.

Here is a link to a letter that the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Lung Association, the American Public Health Association and other organizations wrote in 2016 opposing the use of biomass for electricity production because of the health harm it creates.

And below is a letter which several environmental organizations are sending out now to encourage people to attend the Georgia PSC meeting on September 12th:

Dear Georgia Power Customers,

Are you pissed about all the recent massive bills from Georgia Power?!?

We are too, and we're writing to warn you about Georgia Power’s latest plans that would raise our bills even higher! Our utility monopoly is requesting the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) permit them to build extremely expensive dirty biomass plants well over the usual cost of electricity at our expense!

Georgia Power's biomass plans are so unimaginably costly that they are expected to cost customers billions of dollars for a tiny amount of power. This deal is so terrible for us that the total cost for it is being hidden from the public as a company "trade secret" and no one is willing to testify that this plan is beneficial to the public.

We are already feeling the burden of the massive bill spikes caused by the Georgia Public Service Commission voting in favor of six Georgia Power bill increases starting in 2023. These new biomass plants will only make our high bills worse, while polluting our air and causing more negative health impacts on local communities.

We need to hold the Georgia Public Service Commission responsible for our crazy high bills and demand they reject all of these costly and unnecessary biomass projects that will further increase our bills and contribute to the pollution of our beautiful state.

Join us on September 12th at 9 AM to speak out during the Public Comments portion of the last PSC Energy Committee Hearing before the PSC's final vote on the biomass projects.

At 9 AM we’ll meet up at the Ground Level and share some handouts and more information. We’ll go up together to the 1st floor hearing room by 9:30 AM for the PSC Energy Committee Hearing.

Your voice matters! Numbers matter! Let's make our voices heard before it is too late.
