Portland Landmarks has a list of 9 Ways to Learn about Black History in Maine, which shows us that whether you're walking, reading, listening or looking, Black history is a significant part of Maine and American history.

Join us Friday, Feb. 11 at Deering Oaks Pond for Frozen Funk, an ice skating jam where everyone's invited.

 

  • 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., open skate on the pond with a WJZP provided soundtrack
  • Free skate rental (limited supply, come early!)
  • Food trucks on site for snacks or dinner

Weekdays, 6 to 7 a.m.

The Spin features women of color talking policy, social justice, race, sex, gender, power and love.

Café Jazz with Gene Knight 

Weekdays, 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Straight-ahead jazz—high-energy, engaging, and classic.

 

The Soul of Jazz with Jamal Ahmad (pictured, right)

Weekdays, 3 to 5 p.m.

Classic and contemporary soul/jazz, international rhythms, dance music and other genre-bending styles.

Community Happenings

 

Hip-hop heads, poets, beat makers, look out: We're excited for the next Freestyle Friday, hosted by Marco Soulo and Almondbuttersmooth. Friday, Feb. 11, it starts at 8 p.m. right as our skate wraps up. Pull up to the livestream on YouTube or Instagram.
