The Wait is Almost Over

It's almost here! On March 5, the 17th Annual Bryn Du Art Show will officially open! This year's Art Show was curated from a pool of 564 visual art pieces representing 13 states. Ultimately, this year's juror, Ms. Lisa McLymont, chose 81 pieces by 79 artists to be shown in the exhibit. And wow, are these fantastic pieces! The accepted artworks hail from Ohio, Connecticut, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia and Hawaii. We cannot wait to share this year's show with you whether it be in-person, online or both! Please visit BrynDu.com for details.

Viewing the Art Show In-Person

Bryn Du is thrilled to be able to bring all of this amazing artwork to the Mansion for your viewing pleasure! While the crowd-gathering events will all be virtual this year, you are still able to visit the show to admire the art in person. All visitors must wear masks and maintain social distancing. Please do a self-check of symptoms prior to entering the building. Because only 10 guests will be allowed into the show at a time, we ask for your patience during busy moments. At-risk guests are welcome to contact the office to schedule off-hours private tours as needed. We look forward to seeing you!

Taking Home that Special Piece

We know that many of our visitors look forward to the Art Show every year to add to their personal collection of artworks. We also know that sometimes people visit and fall in love with a piece of art so much so that they simply have to make it their own! Luckily, the majority of this year's pieces are for sale and they are definitely worthy of a true love connection! Purchases can be made in person and online, and Bryn Du will accept a variety of payment methods. Please consider supporting our  incredibly talented artists by purchasing a piece to enjoy at home or as a gift for years to come.

Another Unique Year

Generally speaking, Bryn Du is almost always hopping with activity! While private events, art classes and the Art Show will still occur within the proper health department guidelines, most of the other usual public events will not be happening this year. As of right now, the Granville Garden Club's Daffodil Show,  the Granville Rotary's Taste of Granville event and the Licking County Chamber of Commerce's BizFest will all be cancelled for the year. In addition, this fall's Heart of Ohio Quilters Guild's Quilt Show will be postponed, as well. We look forward to welcoming these special events back to Bryn Du as normalcy returns.

Welcome to Bryn Du!

Have you ever noticed how beautiful the entrance to Bryn Du is? Currently it is a beautifully landscaped area that welcomes guests through its wrought iron gates in style. Even years ago, we can tell that this gorgeous arch was made to impress and to stand the test of time. The above photo was likely taken in the late 1960s. Notice the simple lantern hanging from the center of the stone arch. That lantern remained in place until it was knocked off by a delivery truck in the 2010s. Now trucks and buses enter by way of the current "out" driveway but, back then, this archway was used for visitors leaving the property! The directionals were changed in part because the arch itself is so welcoming and deserves the opportuity to greet Bryn Du's many guests. Although it is unclear exactly who built the arch, it is suspected that this was done during Mr. Jones's time as owner in the early 1900s. In fact, it is very likely that the arch was created around the same time that the property's walls and garden were built. Why is that assumed? Because the same kind of stone is used on all three! The gorgeous arch, strong walls and beautiful garden area were all built from sandstone which was quarried from the back of the Bryn Du property. Next time you visit, take a moment to admire the arch that welcomes you to campus.

Quincy's History Corner

Hi everyone! So, I don't know about you but I love dinner. Yes, you heard me correctly. Dinner. That lovely time of day when we sit down together to talk and enjoy a meal. It is possible that I enjoy dinner more for the table scraps than for the talking but that's neither here nor there. Did you know that A LOT of famous people have dined at the Mansion over the years? First of all, Presidents William Howard Taft and Calvin Coolidge were here! These two likely visited Mr. Jones to gain his business and political support. I also know that Warren G. Harding, when he was Lt. Governor of Ohio, spent time at the Mansion. As a total contrast, world famous violinist Isaac Stern was a frequent visitor of Sally Jones (did you know that the main auditorium at Carnegie Hall is named after him?!). There are actually a lot of entertainers on the list - probably due to Alice Baxter Jones and Sally's involvement in the arts! Musicians Jascha Heifetz, Ignacy Jan Paderewski (he is also a former Polish Prime Minster), and Sergei Rachmaninoff are all rumored to have graced our halls, as are actresses Lillian Gish, Katherine Cornell and Mae West. It's the Who's Who of Diners! I wonder what sort of table scraps they might have had for me.... Until next time!

Love, Quincy
