HEY LEWIS HERE! I am thrilled to be this month’s featured dancer! Dancing and performing are things I’m so passionate about and I’m so glad to get to share my journey with you all. WHERE IT ALL BEGAN I was born and raised in Adelaide, South Australia and through my time living there I trained in pretty much all styles of dance. I started my training in a hip-hop class with a woman named Lauren Pisaniello. She quickly became a very important figure in my life who continues to lead and mentor me through my dance life. I didn’t start taking dancing very seriously until around the age of ten, when I started training in more classical styles of dance. I was extremely privileged to have received a scholarship to Scotch College Adelaide, where I furthered my training – especially in musical theatre, ballet and tap. PHASE 1 At age 14, I moved out of home to live in Melbourne and train at Patrick Studios Australia in the academy program. I was very fortunate to have such supportive parents who trusted me and allowed me to leave home (despite taking a lot of convincing) as well as an extremely supportive uncle who opened his home to me and let me live with him. Although I only spent a year in Melbourne, I think it was one of the biggest years of personal growth I had ever had. My dancing had improved throughout this year as I feel like I built up a very solid foundation of technique and was pushed harder than I had been before. PHASE 2 In 2018, I moved (yes, again!) to the Gold Coast where I began studying full-time at Dance Force. Having now completed my two years of full-time, I can say training at Dance Force was the best decision I had ever made. In my time at Dance Force I was given so many opportunities and experienced so many amazing things that allowed me to grow as a dancer and a person. I was able to make industry connections and was given travel opportunities to learn and perform interstate and overseas. |

COMPETITIONS If you know me, you would know I have been a competitive dancer for the past few years now. My first solo was in 2015 and it was just a cute little jazz solo that I worked so hard on. In the few years to come I started taking a greater interest in solos and started doing more solos at bigger competitions. In 2016 I was lucky enough to place in the Top 5 teens at GTB Finals and this was a major achievement for me having not seen such a calibre of talent before. It was a moment that inspired me to do whatever it took to be as good as all the seniors I saw dance on that stage. In 2018 I was named Senior and Overall Champion of Get the Beat and in 2019 was named KAR’s Mr. Dance America and was the winner of the Australian Dance Festival’s Dance Around the World solo competition. Winning some of these awards allowed me to win some amazing prizes and gave me the opportunity to travel and train with some of my favourite dancers and choreographers in the world. |

LEWIS CHOREOGRAPHY In 2017, I began my choreographic journey. The first dance I ever choreographed was a contemporary solo for Shayla Matthews. Shayla and I had an instant connection and are proud to say I have been one of her main solo coaches for the past three years. I started teaching more privates and classes locally and slowly began to grow my skills as a teacher. In 2018 I choreographed two new routines for Shayla, one which won a regional title and the other which then went on to win Get the Beat’s Teen Championship at their Finals. Having my choreography be seen on such a big stage helped me get my name out there and opened so many doors for me and my teaching. Since then, I have taught across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, meeting and getting to work with so many amazing dancers! In the past year, I have choreographed routines that have gone on to win Showcase DOTY and again a GTB Championship. |

THE FUTURE What are my plans for the future? To be completely honest, I don’t have a set plan. Obviously, I want to keep dancing and performing for as long as I can, but I don’t have a big master plan to achieve my goals and dreams yet. I can see myself moving to Sydney soon where I hope to work professionally as a dancer and continue my teaching and choreographic journey too. In saying this, I do have a few things set in stone next year and a lot of things in the works too. I’m excited to be travelling across Australia and back to New Zealand, Singapore and America next year as well! Thank you DanceAus Connect for having me share my story! I am so lucky to have experienced so much in my seventeen years and am excited to see where my next chapter takes me! LEWIS SHILVOCK |
