As the end of 2023 approaches, we can finally begin to look back at our MFO team members phenomenal achievements throughout the year. True to our vision, MFO team members of staff and volunteers will continue to expand our work focus in 2024. This means that the MFO team will continue to use their abilities and energy to exceed expectations. MFO have staff with heart!!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our partners that have made our journey to make our beautiful Gold Coast City safe and comfortable for all our residents. You have invaluable support that has positively impacted ordinary people’s lives one step at the time.

THANK YOU!

Margaret Mead, anthropologist, author, and speaker once said:

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can’t change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Saturday 25 November 2023 was the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and marks day one of the 16 Days of Activism. Each year, from 25 November to 10 December, World Human Rights Day, the 16 Days of Activism campaign calls for action against one of the world’s most persistent violations of human rights – violence against women.

During the 16 Days of Activism, people around the world unite to raise awareness about gender-based violence, challenge discriminatory attitudes and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women for good.

MFO out and about

MFO thanks Share the Dignity for the kind donations of bags filled with life's essentials for those doing it tough during the end of year.

These bags are lovingly, packed, and delivered to charities across the country like MFO by the amazing volunteers from “Share the Dignity” who work hard to get sponsored bags into the hands of those who need them most. Thank you all from MFO once again for the amazing support each year, to give a gift that makes an incredible impact.

More Fantastic Opportunities

As we start to wrap up the year, our Business & Individual Support students are working hard to complete their modules. The Individual Support students had the privilege of having Cassie come and speak about her role in the NDIS space and enjoyed dressing up in their PPE gear to complete a personal care simulation.

As part of a team building exercise our Business students completed the activity rooms at Hijinx Hotel, they did an amazing job at working together.

Christmas is the time for giving and MFO loves to help wherever we can. For the month of December, MFO is offering up to $200 in gift vouchers for each referral who signs up to MFOs dedicated disability services. We deliver in-home assistance, support to connect and engage in the community, Plan Management and Support Coordination. Times are tough and an extra $200 could really help out this Christmas time. If you or anyone you know needs NDIS supports, please don’t hesitate to contact us and you could receive $200 as a thank you from MFO.

Simply scan the code below and fill out the basic details and submit and someone from MFO’s NDIS team will be in touch the same day. Alternatively, you can call us on (07) 5571 0381 or email reception@mfo.org.au and we will be in touch.

End of year reflections from the Multicultural Women’s Office

2023 has been another incredible year for our women’s programs where we have supported hundreds of women to celebrate their individuality, make genuine friendships, build their self-esteem, achieve their goals, celebrate their diversity and have lots of fun doing it. We achieved this through our individualised case management support, the WE EARN employment program, Multicultural Women’s Friendship Group and English literacy support. We also celebrated women by hosting the International Women’s Day event, delivering a variety of training to the community and coordinating the Multicultural Women’s Health and Wellbeing Expo in collaboration with TAFE QLD.

This year we also proudly partnered with the Women’s Space at Labrador to bring both our women’s groups together through our monthly cooking classes. We travelled around the world featuring dishes from Ukraine, Iran, France, Ethiopia, India and Lebanon and we would love to thank the Benevolent Society staff members especially Letwina Mulunga and her dedicated volunteers Mary and Giselle for all their help this year.  We also promoted the vibrant cultural landscape of the Gold Coast by collaborating with the Bleach Festival hosting the Middle Eastern style QAHWA and supporting the amazing Kevin and Monica with the Heartbeats drumming project.

A HUGE thank you goes out to the amazing women’s team staff being Mirvat, Cherry and our ever-supportive volunteer Yana who are such amazing and passionate advocates for women. We could not do what we do without all our amazing volunteers and I would also love to say a HUGE thank you to our other fabulous volunteers including Mary-Ellen for running the sewing group, her assistant Valentyna, Nic who runs our English group, Ben our other English teacher, and Sonia, Nicola and Dawn for their support with the women’s group this year. We wish our community a safe and beautiful Christmas and New Year and we look forward to more exciting women focused programs next year.

“There is no year passing without challenges. However, our SETS Team; Ezzat, Hannah, Mohamed and I welcomed these challenges as our team is confident enough to face them. 2023 was a year full of fears and questions, doubts and obstacles. We hoped that it was going to be a better year compared to previous years affected by COVID19. Yet, the aftershocks just started affecting our communities well-being. We stood strong with our families and we have watched them grow during this year as they did not allow themselves to be washed away by these tides. Most of our families embraced the opportunities that 2023 brought. Their courage helped them to find jobs, 7 out of 10 individuals are now employed, self-employed or finalising their training courses this year.

Many families made it to the property ladder or secured rental properties by themselves. They have learnt more independence, autonomy, and belief that they can do whatever they put their mind into in our beautiful Australia. And this is our job at SETS. We push them, encourage them, educate them and walk beside them on their independent journey they have chosen. We are extremely blessed to ride on these voyages, in the fun and laughter but even in the sad times as well. I would like to thank our clients for sharing their experiences with us, and my team for working together in a very unique way, which makes us even stronger for the years to come. I am definitely very lucky to be a part of it."
