Happy Independence Day!

We hope everyone had a great Independence day. As we reflect on our nation's history and what it means to be an American we can remember that there's no single ethnic culture or heritage that can lay claim to owning or defining America. We are a nation of immigrants, strangers, and diverse persons. Our country was built on individuals fleeing persecution and other hardships and became a land founded on certain unalienable rights for all people – life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

We reflect and recognize that many people still come to our shores seeking refuge and those rights we hold dear and we celebrate our ability to welcome them!

On July 9th many of our clients also celebrated Eid Al-Adha, the second greatest Islamic holiday, which honors the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to Allah's command. A common greeting is "Eid Mubarak" which means "blessed feast" in Arabic. Eid al-Adha is also a time for visiting with friends and family, exchanging gifts and visiting the graves of relatives.

July's Activities

"Know Your Rights" Seminar

In July, we also held a "Know Your Rights" seminar for our clients from the Central African Republic. We had over twenty attendees! It was a workshop and discussion focused on our human rights as Americans with the aim of better empowering the women from this community. At WoW we believe a vital part of community development and integration is for our clients to understand their rights as new Americans. These rights protect and support our women!

This event was planned with help from representatives from Southern Valley Services. We are so honored to host these types of events and would like to thank all the volunteers, the community leaders who put this together, and all the women who participated.

This month Samira, our founder and Executive Director, was featured in VoyageUtah, which is part of the LA-based Voyage Group of Magazines. Their mission is to promote mom and pops, artists, creatives, makers and small businesses by providing a platform for these hidden gems to tell their stories in their own words. In the interview, Samira shares some of the journey and challenges of starting of WoW. She also shares that the success of WoW is tied to our mission's authenticity. She says:

"It is extremely important that our new neighbors know who they can trust and what can and cannot be done for them. I want to be very “grassroots,” getting things done for each individual who comes in, and helping people as individuals through whatever they are struggling with, never giving them a template answer, and never taking no for an answer.".

We are grateful for her tenacity and dedication to such a worthy cause. See the link below to read the whole article!
