Emissions Reduction Plan

out for consultation

The Governments' latest emissions reduction plan has been released.  This will set the direction for climate action for the next 15 years. It will also outline the  pathway to meeting the 2050 net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and biogenic methane targets by implementing policies and strategies for specific sectors.  These sectors include transport, energy, waste, building & construction and agriculture & forestry.

The discussion document is out for consultation with feedback closing on 24th November 2021.

Northern Pathway scrapped

The Government has now scrapped the $785 million cycling and walking bridge over the Waitematā Harbour just months after unveiling it.

The money saved will be spent on other transport projects, some in Auckland and others around New Zealand.

It leaves the future of cycling and walking access from the North Shore to the CBD up in the air. Minister Michael Wood said "We will run a short process to investigate lower cost options to create a connection for walking and cycling across the Waitematā before the additional harbour crossing is built".

Speed limit changes proposed

Auckland Transport are seeking feedback on some speed limit changes across the region. 800 roads have been identified as needing new safer, more appropriate speed limits.

462 of these roads are near schools, 208 are rural roads and 41 have come from community requests.

If the changes are approved they will be implemented by mid 2022.

To find out what is proposed, read more in the link below and have your say by 14th November 2021.

Avoiding meat and dairy products is one of the biggest ways to reduce your environmental impact, according to the scientific studies.  But what is the difference between beef and chicken? Does a bowl of rice produce more climate warming greenhouse gases than a plate of chips? Is wine more environmentally friendly than beer? To find out the climate impact of what you eat and drink, choose from one of the 34 items in our calculator and pick how often you have it.

New ECCA funding announced to decarbonise transport

The transport sector currently produces 47% of New Zealand's CO2 emissions, and between 1990 and 2018, domestic transport emissions increased by 90%.

The Government is extending its investment into reducing transport emissions with the Low Emission Transport Fund.

Round 1 is open to proposals that demonstrate a range of low emission technologies, services, infrastructure, innovations and business models (e.g. Mobility-as-a-Service/MaaS, transport technology and software projects) and low emission on-road vehicles.

There is $3.4 million available - could your business apply?

Are mandatory digital vaccination passports needed?

Heart of the City (HOTC) are calling for mandatory digital passports to provide certainty for business and ensure the city centre’s position is secured. The city centre has the greatest concentration of businesses in New Zealand and consumer facing businesses are currently losing around $25M a week due to the current COVID restrictions.

What are your thoughts on this?
