Hi all,
And just like that, the election is over. While the outcome may not have been what I hoped for, the journey was everything I could have hoped for and more. Regardless of if/how you voted on Tuesday, you are receiving this because you made an impression on me [well, also if you subscribed on your own ;) ]. That impression could have come in the form of support, or pushing me to articulate my position on an issue, or sharing your experience that caused me to think outside of my own.
Over this last year I learned an immense amount about how municipal government works, how campaigns work, what issues face our community. I walked and rode my bike all over Waltham and appreciated the amazing diversity of our neighborhoods (and also our poor pedestrian/bike infrastructure - looking at you, Totten Pond Rd and Lincoln St!). But the absolute highlight was meeting people on my street and across the city. I am eternally grateful for each person who opened the door to me and shared their experiences as a Waltham resident. I am especially grateful that the people who have different ideas and experiences from myself took the time to speak with me. The longest, hardest, and most engaging conversations were often with those I was less in agreement with. It's easy to talk to someone with whom you agree, it's a lot harder to have respectful dialogue with those who don't.
I've gotten countless messages of support over the past few days, thank you. Many end with encouragement to run again in 2025. I can't commit to that right now, but I do commit to supporting anyone who wants to explore a run of their own. More voices and ideas are a net positive for civic engagement and our community. Reach out if you'd like to chat; the offer doesn't expire.
If we met on the doors or at an event and you see me out in the community, please say hi! I usually remember faces but names stick less.
All the best,
Emma
ps: if you have a yard sign, I'll be making the rounds to collect them this weekend. If you've already removed/discarded it, not a problem.
