July 2023

Welcome to the UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education news update. In this issue we inform you about developments and updates related to health promotion, community health, education and sustainable development.

Update from the secretariat

One of the highlights related to the UNESCO Chair during the second quarter of 2023 was the Global Community Health Annual workshop 2023. With over 300 participants and a group of excellent speakers this 3rd edition was successful. On 2 June we held a workshop and webinar on “One Health”, the first in a series of initiatives dedicated to exchanges on “One Health” practices. The recordings of some recent webinars “Connecting health and education to unleash learners’ potential” and the Spanish webinar on “The Promotion and Education of Comprehensive Sexual Health in educational systems” are available on our website.

You can follow our activities through Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, website and regular news updates.

Global Community Health Annual workshop 2023

The third edition of the Global Community Health Annual Workshop took place from 13 till 15 June 2023. With over 1000 people from 87 countries registered and 300 people actively participating during the three days, the workshop is reaching more people every year. With 96,8% of the participants being (very) satisfied with the workshop, it was a great success. Presentations of all speakers are available on the dedicated webpage. The recordings of their presentations will be available in English and French during the next few months.

Addressing hate speech through education: a guide for policy-makers and teachers

How can countries around the world harness the power of education in the fight against online and offline hate speech? UNESCO and the United Nations’ Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect have jointly developed the first guide for policy-makers and teachers, exploring educational responses to this phenomenon and making practical recommendations to strengthen education systems.

Educational responses to hate speech and all forms of hateful communication include:

  • Training teachers and learners on the values and practices related to being respectful global and digital citizens;

  • Adopting pedagogical and whole-school approaches to strengthening social and emotional learning;

  • Revising and reviewing curricula and educational materials to make them culturally responsive and to include content that identifies hate speech and promotes the right to freedom of expression.

A New EuroHealthNet Policy Précis sets out policies, good practices and concrete recommendations on how to pursue ‘health equity-centred’ social protection and care in face of the rising cost of living. The new Policy Précis provides an overview of EU policies, tools and programmes that can help governments at all levels strengthen measures to mitigate the negative economic, social and health consequences at individual and societal levels. It provides inspirational examples of how public authorities are taking action to implement more health-promoting social protection and care services. It concludes with eight recommendations.

Thesis on building a health promoting school community

Dutch schools increasingly work on health and well-being through the Dutch Healthy School program. However, activities are not easy to sustain in everyday practice due to the dynamic nature and  complexity of real-life settings. To embrace this complexity and achieve sustainable implementation, contextualization to tailor local initiatives and ownership of stakeholders (pupils, school personnel and parents) in practice are important. However, stakeholders need community capacity for this. To build community capacity among stakeholders, this research project developed, implemented and evaluated four central strategies: appointing and motivating leaders, stimulating a participatory school culture, and creating a local network of collaborations and resources. These are results of the thesis Building community capacity as a strategy for (sustainable) implementation of Health Promoting Schools: Creating a Healthy School together (2023) by Bonnie van Dongen (bonnie.van.dongen@vu.nl) from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

‘Schools4Health’ kicks off: strengthening health promotion in European schools

Schools4Health (2023-2026) aims to introduce, strengthen, and sustain the adoption of a health promoting school (HPS) approach and other whole school approaches to health.

Overall, Schools4Health will explore and demonstrate how different sectors, particularly the education and health sectors, can work together to encourage and enable students, teachers, school staff, parents, as well as other stakeholders to turn schools into 'health promoting schools', facilitating healthier lifestyles for all, especially for those living in or facing vulnerable circumstances.

The initiative is coordinated by EuroHealthNet, with the participation of partners from public health institutes and departments, as well as international networks, including the UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education and the SHE network.
