HCOP’s COVID-19 Response The HCOP team has been closely monitoring the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) updates as well as real-time Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), local, state and federal recommendations. We understand the ability to adapt to our world’s current situation may be difficult for most individuals. The staff of HCOP want you to know that you can count on us to be there for you and your families. To minimize the risk of exposure in our community, all in-person HCOP sessions have been CANCELLED since March 2020. Does this mean that HCOP ends…the answer is NO. Our programming activities continue. |

2022: New Year, New Perspective Here we are towards the end of yet another year and with it comes all the excitement that the season brings. For many of us, it’s a busy time filled with finishing off final exams, moving out of the dorms, traveling (safely, of course), registering for new courses, and gift shopping for family and friends near and far. HCOP is truly a community and it is at this time of year where it rings exceptionally true!! Once again, we want to encourage each of you and thank you for your commitment to HCOP – we know it has not been easy given the level of uncertainty during the last year. The new-year will bring new learning experiences, new challenges and of course, new fun. We, the HCOP team, look forward to what lies ahead for us as an HCOP community in 2022.
We wish each of you peace, joy, hope and happiness during this holiday season and throughout the New Year!!!
Stay safe, healthy and happy!!!

“What Exactly Do You Do All Day?” – A Day In The Life Of A Health Professional While many students that opt to participate in the Creighton University Pipeline to Success Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) often have an idea of what health professional career they wish to pursue, many do not and those that do realize that they are open to learning more about other health professional careers outside of the one they desire to become in the future. For those that are still trying to figure it out, a portion of our HCOP programmatic activities involve career exploration which aims to empower students to discover, plan, and pursue their health professional goals. As we continue to deliver programmatic activities in a virtual space, we carved out time during our most recent HCOP session on January 22, 2022 to focus primarily on what we call – A Day in the Life of a Health Professional!! From speech pathologists to health administrators to physician assistants, there are a plethora of health career options beyond the dentists and pharmacists we’re accustomed to seeing on television and/or during our yearly checkups. |

Testing, Testing! Like it or not, taking exams is a part of life for students who are pursuing a career in healthcare. For high schoolers, the most important exams - when it comes to taking that next step into college - are the ACT and SAT. All qualifying high school participants have been provided with self-paced Kaplan test prep software and question banks through HCOP, which has proven fundamental in studying for the ACT or SAT. To top it off, HCOP provides proctored practice testing dates in order to give students ample experience taking the exam. When it comes to test taking, practice makes perfect. One of the best ways for students to improve their score is by taking practice tests in “exam conditions” (i.e. in a quiet space, with no extra breaks or distractions). |

Rehabilitation Hospitals - A Virtual Experience with Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital When most people think of a hospital setting, they often think of what is known as "acute care" - brief treatment immediately after an injury, disease, or surgery. But what happens when an injury isn't quickly fixed, or a patient can't go right home after surgery? What happens when injuries are so severe that healing takes months, years, and adjustment to a "new normal"? This is when the rehabilitation hospital setting is crucial. On Saturday, January 29th, HCOP high school and health professional participants had the opportunity to learn more about this specific field of medicine from both the practitioner and patient's perspective. |

Managing Stress and Student Success with HCOP As HCOP participants navigate the college and career landscape, most find that stress is an inevitable part of life. Stress and other mental health issues can affect many areas of students’ lives, and have a direct impact on academic achievement, physical health, and relationships. While many students take time to hone their academic skills, oftentimes good stress management skills are the backbone to student success - in school and beyond. To this end, HCOP held two sessions to help give students the tools they need for mental health. |

Goal Setting and Time Management with HCOP When pursuing a career in healthcare, good time management is paramount to success. But what does good time management look like? Many times, we describe time management as finding time to “get it all done” - but without taking a step back to set clear goals, we can’t truly know if the choices we make are the right ones in regard to our time. In this way, goal setting and time management go hand-in-hand. On Saturday, January 22nd, HCOP participants took part in a goal setting and time management workshop led by HCOP Academic Success Counselor, Christina Jelinek. |

Virtual Clinical Experiences with BodyInteract™ Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, HCOP has assumed a virtual format. One challenge that comes with a virtual program is providing students with valuable clinical experiences. Since 2020 HCOP has partnered with BodyInteract™ Virtual Patient Simulator, a web-based program that allows students to assume the role of a healthcare provider. HCOP high school and undergraduate students were able to take part in virtual clinical experiences on January 22nd and 29th, respectively. During these sessions, Dr. John Stone, MD, PhD, was once again on hand to lead students through the case, provide first-hand knowledge, and answer any questions. |
