The winter solstice is Tuesday! It is a time we often take for granted, knowing that it means that the days which had previously been getting shorter, will now get longer. Would it be surprising to hear that the first solstice is documented in the Talmud?

The Sages taught: Adam said, when the first human saw the day progressively diminishing, "Woe to me; perhaps because I sinned, the world is becoming dark around me and returning to chaos and disorder, and this is the death sentenced upon me from Heaven." He arose and spent 8 days in fasting and in prayer. Once he experienced the season of Tevet/the season of the solstice, and saw that the day was progressively lengthening, Adam said, "this is the order of the world!"

This description of the first solstice mirrors the scene of the first sunset. The Talmud relates that Adam said on the first day the world was created,

"Woe is me since because I sinned, the world is becoming dark around me and the world will return to chaos and disorder-- this is the death that was sentenced upon me from Heaven!" He spent all night fasting and crying and Eve was crying opposite him. Once dawn broke, he said, "This is the order of the world!"

Fearing the increasing darkness is a long-held, natural human reaction. Whether the day is coming to a close, or the days are getting noticeably shorter, the pangs of fear concerning mortality enter. There is a palpable dread that can come as we see darkness close around us.

But, Adam, noticed that after the darkness, the light finds its way back in. Entering. Illuminating. Warming. These passages serve to remind us to hold onto hope based on rational thinking. Adam's observations prove that after darkness comes light and this is the order of the world.

Whatever we may be going through now that is difficult or painful, we are reminded that a new day and a new season will soon come and light will again triumph. May it be so in the new season that is just around the corner!

PLEASE REGISTER: BALANCING YOUR INNER LIFE

Jewish tradition houses some of the most beautiful teachings on character qualities. A thousand years ago, Rabbi Bachya Ibn Pakuda decided to these sacred texts together, organized into various character qualities that he felt would inspire people to live lives of meaning. He called his work “Duties of the Heart,” and it is the work upon which the Mussar Movement (of Exceptional Character Qualities) is based. The book is available for free on Sefaria.org, and so we will take time each week to study teachings and explore how we might make sense of them in our lives today.

Join us for one class, several, or all 9 weeks worth of classes! Please invite your friends to take the series with you, too!

THE LONGEST NIGHT

Last year over 325 lives were lost on the streets of Orange County, and this number only continues to increase.  In fact, the LA Times, in an article on Orange County homelessness  this past week, reported that homeless deaths in Orange County has already hit 321 - view it HERE.  That includes people of all ages and of every gender.

Each December 21st—- the longest night of the year and the day that has become known as National Homeless Persons Memorial Day—- faith leaders, concerned citizens, and advocates for the homeless come together to remember and honor those who have died during the year. Because of Covid, the Orange County memorial will be videotaped and aired on YouTube at 7pm on that evening. Please stay tuned as more information will be shared in this newsletter. Together may we bring dignity to those who have died on the streets. Hosted by Hope 4 Restoration and Women Driver's Group (of which Rabbi Miller is a proud member).
