The Science of Reading

The article What Is Scarborough’s Reading Rope and How Do Teachers Use It? untangles Scarborough's Reading Rope model, a vital resource for teachers of emergent readers, young and old. The following image illustrates the model.

The following video series provides a clear and succinct explanation of The Science of Reading model, a structured reading approach that explains that reading comprehension is a product of decoding and language comprehension, both of which are necessary. Each video is around one minute, so I encourage you to watch each video in "The Science of Reading" series.

  • Part 1: The Reading Brain

  • Part 2: The Simple View of Reading

  • Part 3: Scarborough’s Reading Rope

Teaching Reading

A high level of reading ability is needed to achieve educational and professional goals. The reality is that 43 million U.S. adults possess low literacy skills (National Center for Education Statistics). This webinar aims to support adult ESOL teachers and students in the teaching and learning of reading. I discuss research-based approaches for balanced reading instruction. Click here to access the presentation PDF that has hyperlinks to a plethora of resources for teachers, tutors, and parents.
