Newsletter October 17, 2022 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

One of our core principles at Keeping It Sacred that we hold dear, is spiritual wellness. A place where you can talk about who you are in your multiple identities. A place where you can ask questions and where your insights will be valued. A place where you will be inspired by those around you who are working toward intentional living; a community where you will be championed by others around you.

This week, Jewish communities all around the world will be reading the first part of the Torah which describes creation. There's a concept in the Lurianic Kabbalistic philosophy that describes one of the first actions that God (called the Ein Sof/ the One without End) took to create the world, and that is: God retracted through a process called tzimtzum. Tzimtzum is the activity of retracting to make room for those around us; for allowing others to have the creative space and freedom to expand into the fullest they can be.

At Keeping It Sacred, we work to hold open this kind of sacred space for one another by listening to one another through tears, through laughter, through fears and complex thinking, and through deep thought. Rather than pushing a particular line of thought or "fixed" thinking, we create spiritual wellness to make room for what truly resonates within a person's spirit. Authentically.

How have you been able to hold space for others at Keeping It Sacred? How have others held space for you? I'd love to read if you'd like to share with me at rabbimiller@keepingitsacred.com.And if you haven't yet participated in our programs, I'd love to invite you to do so at keepingitsacred.com/upcoming-1.

Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

Last week's newsletter featured information on artist Laurie Steelink's artwork (note her proper name spelling which was erroneously listed last newsletter) now on display at the new Orange County Museum of Art. It turns out, she is a dear friend of one of our cherished members, fellow artist Bruria Finkel. Please see their incredible creations here:

WELCOME TO THE WORLD, NOAH!

The entire Keeping It Sacred community welcomes Noah to the world! This past weekend, we enjoyed an intimate naming ceremony with parents, grandparents, uncles, and family and friends present. He was wrapped in his mother's bat mitzvah tallit, and his father's baby shoe, and several cried tears of joy as he received blessings from all. Mazal Tov!

Review of our recent Simchat Torah celebration at Keeping It Sacred-- from one of our cherished members in England (also on were those across 7 time zones!):

"Thank you so much to Rabbi Heather Ellen Miller and everyone with Keeping It Sacred for creating such an enjoyable Simchat Torah service today!!!

Rabbi Miller is such a champion for organising hybrid live/zoom events from Los Angeles with people tuning in from several different continents and time zones! We love our KITS community so much."

It was a true joy to dance with the Torah to the festive klezmer music of professional violinist Janice Mautner Markham in celebration of the holiday of Simchat Torah (literally: rejoicing of the Torah!). Deep thanks to all who attended in person and virtually!

CONCERNS RE: HATE SPEECH IN LOS ANGELES

This week, the statements out of the LA City Council attacking Black, Indigenous Oaxacan, Armenian, Jewish, and LGBTQ people were reprehensible. They also highlight the dangers of standing idly by and silence, and undermine the great solidarity we have achieved across Los Angeles.

May we all remember that we are stronger together and must remain united against hatred. And we must speak up and speak out against injustice wherever it festers.

Rabbi Miller, on behalf of Keeping It Sacred, is in close contact with grassroots organizers working to bring shalom back to the City of Angels. As this situation changes daily, please contact her for the latest and to get involved.

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

THIS THURSDAY AND EVERY THURSDAY! Ever want to jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old? Now you can! Join us as we study a page of Talmud every day, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along.

The more varied the participants the deeper the conversations. Thursdays 11am PT/2pm ET.

Currently, we are 100 members strong from 34 different states and 11 countries!

We are:

People interested in becoming Jewish

Members of various Jewish denominations

Clergy

Lay leaders

Retired people

People who are not Jewish

We are in our 20s to 80s, and we are everywhere on the spectrum of gender.

Build community affirming of one another’s journey in the sea of Talmud with us! Benefit from the wisdom of Jewish tradition!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

AND just prior to our Talmud Study, we hold space for check-ins and healing prayers for loved ones in need, including ourselves.

Keeping It Sacred programs are free for all because we uphold the value of keruv/accessibility; voluntary financial contributions to help offset the cost of these programs are greatly appreciated.

To join and of these gatherings, please register HERE. Also, DM Rabbi Miller on Facebook HERE to be added to the closed, secret group where we question and discuss. And look for us on Instagram daily HERE.

Kol HaKavod to our cherished Keeping It Sacred member Sue Parker Gerson for her recent entries on pages 90, 91.
