Abolitionist educator, Bettina L. Love, paints a pathway, a portrait of educational freedom that seeks to create social justice for "dark folx" that ripples out into the lives of all children and oppressed peoples. When we recognize that modern schooling is systematically dehumanizing students, families, and staff we can easily feel lost and overwhelmed. Sudbury Schools have been advocating for "freedom" from "coercive learning environments" for 60 years. The KC Sudbury School seeks to prioritize antiracism policy and practice because it reinforces the roots of freedom seen in the Sudbury Valley School, while also recognizing the very clear-eyed reality of private schools as often white dominant cultural spaces. KCSS is working diligently to build a multi-cultural learning environment where we are engaged as a community of practice; holding an honest historical view and a hopeful vision of the future. Our Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee is currently working to establish our policies and practice recommendations. We have added "Restoration" as one of the "Ends We Seek" in our Bylaws and are deliberating on the questions: "What does restoration look like?" "What is it that we are trying to restore?"
