NEW BOARD MEMBERS!

City Farm welcomes Linda Halisky and Aimee Wyatt to our Board of Directors. We are thrilled to have them donate their skills and energy to our team.

Linda grew up on a small chicken ranch in Southern California before earning her PhD.  She is retired from a career as Professor of English, Department Head, and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly.

Aimee is former Transit Planner, Marketing Manager and Interim Director at the Regional Transportation Agency and has worked as a consultant and Interim General Manager at the SLO Food Co-op.

NEW TENANT!

Farmers Katie Ikard and her daughter Ilse come to us from Portland Oregon, where they grew organic vegetables employing the no-till carbon-farming, soil enrichment techniques we have recently put into place in the student gardens. They've leased a two-acre parcel, planted cover crop, and learned the tricks of using our high-flow irrigation system, not required in the rainy climate of the Northwest.

WINTER FRUIT TREE  CARE

The dormant season is the time for pruning, grafting, and other maintenance tasks for the fifteen fruit trees planted two years ago at a work party in the Food Forest. Larry Hollis, a master of the many skills involved in creating a successful orchard, instructed our staff and volunteers during two two-hour sessions on how to make the radical cuts that will determine long-term shape and productivity.  To protect from from sunburn Pacific Beach High School Farm class students whitewashed all the lower limbs.

MORE FARM CLASS NEWS

Under the direction of Jen Dudley, Pacific Beach Continuation High School Farm Class Enterprise and Business Instructor, students plan future crops and develop marketing materials for the next Farm Box harvest and delivery.  Moving her activities from the classroom to the Farm site, Jen works with staff to manage 2020's doubled enrollment in the twice weekly class.

APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY

Long-term City Farm SLO tenant  and amazing Jack-of-all-trades, Javier Magana, installs hardware to provide power for his Red Barn Farm from donated  wind turbine and solar panels. City Farm's full solar array, which went operational in May 2019, powers only our irrigation pumps.

POTLUCK WITH MAYOR HEIDI HARMON

Stay after our volunteer work party on February 8(9 AM - 12 PM) for another special gathering with Mayor Heidi Harmon, 12 PM - 1 PM. Come enjoy good food and conversation under the pergola. This month, we invite you to discuss the topic of people living unsheltered.
Feel free to bring a snack to share, and please remember a reusable plate and utensils!
