Public launch of Faith Plans for People and Planet – massive scale up of faith-based climate action announced! |
|
|
After months of discussion and collaboration with many of you, the Faith Plans for People and Planet programme launched publicly on October 4, deliberately timed to follow the call from Pope Francis and senior faith leaders for urgent measures on climate change. Our Partners came together to help us spread the world about Faith Plans and we were delighted by the response: - Posts about Faith Plans were seen more than 8.7 million times across social media.
- An interview with FaithInvest CEO Martin Palmer was broadcast repeatedly on October 4 on BBC World TV, which is available in more than 454 million households and three million hotel rooms in more than 200 countries worldwide
- An interview with Dr Rajwant Singh, President of EcoSikh, one of the Faith Plans partners, was broadcast by BBC World TV from St. Peter's Square, Rome
Faith Plans is organised by FaithInvest and WWF's Beliefs and Values Programme and |
|
involves faiths committing to take practicalaction to protect the planet, using their buildings, land, investments and influence to mitigate climate change and create a better world. The programme builds on decades of faith environmental action, in particular the 2009 Faith Commitments launched by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation, which profoundly changed the faiths' response to environmental issues. This is already the largest and most ambitious environmental initiative ever launched by the world's faiths – but is expected to grow much bigger in coming months. Already scores of faith groups, which together reach out to hundreds of millions of people across the world, have signed up to develop a Faith Plan but we know that hundreds, if not thousands more, will join the Movement thanks to our extraordinary coalition of Partners, which comprise the world's leading faith networks, environmental groups and UN bodies. |

'Given the size of their assets and influence, faiths alone, through their actions, could make the crucial difference to the world's efforts to halt irreversible climate change and reverse environmental destruction' – FaithInvest CEO Martin Palmer |

Focus on Impact Investing - Looking ahead, the Membership Team will be focusing on Impact Investing to aid the positive new allocations of capital resulting from divestments and rebalancing and deliver specific desired faith-consistent outcomes on sustainability.
- Look out for a discussion paper around three approaches which we will be kicking off with, covering everything from grassroots investments to large-scale infrastructure.

FaithInvest at the COP26 UN climate conference |
|
|
The 26th gathering of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change – COP26 – takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, from October 31 to November 12. It comes after the latest report by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change – described as a 'code red for humanity' – warned that while some impacts of climate change are now irreversible, a catastrophe can be avoided if the world acts fast. Climate finance is expected to be a major theme of the meeting and FaithInvest will be an active participant and contributor at events and discussions around COP26. |
|
We are partnering with the Global Ethical Finance Initiative (GEFI) on a series of faith and finance meetings, including: - Nov 3: Just Transition Round Table –co-hosted with the World Bank's Climate Investment Funds, a group that has mobilised $8.5bn for climate and now wants to talk with the faiths about a Just Transition Fund
- Nov 9: Faith in Finance Summit – What more can be done by faith groups to successfully finance a transition to Net Zero?
We're also co-hosting: - Nov 4/Fri 5 (TBC): Beyond COP26 – Faith Communities' Plans for Climate Action
- Nov 8: FaithInvest & Focolare dinner

| | All faith organisations document what they value in terms of social principles and environmental beliefs, but not all have integrated those values into their investing. From From Faith Values to Investment provides a guide to ensure a faith's values are reflected in their investments. | | |
