September 2020 September is now here and where has the summer gone. We have survived 8 months of the Coronavirus, keeping our distance and wearing our masks. But there is always a rainbow shining somewhere up there in the clouds and our rainbow has been that we are growing as a community and finding our relationships more enriching every week through our meetings, happy hour every Friday, and work parties on our Adams Creek property. |

HAPPY HOUR Here is a picture (via zoom) of a recent Happy Hour where many of the members are present. This is only about ⅔ of the members and they had no warning I was taking this picture. So I apologize, folks! Our new members have commented about how much they enjoy these happy hours as it allows them to get to know everyone. Even us members who have been around awhile find out interesting information about our fellow cohorts. It is a good time for sharing, laughing, and growing. |

LEARNING, GROWING AND LIVING IN COMMUNITY (This is a story about what happens when two people make a connection through cohousing.) Marilyn Kakudo and Margaret Tumas (aka M&M) met at an Adams Creek Cohousing event, a potluck dinner at the Sherman Avenue house in February 2020 (pre-COVID). Margaret was already a new Associate member and Marilyn had just driven from Colorado with her husky Ava to make sure that ACC and Hood River would be a great place for both of them to live. Even though M&M had unique pasts, needs and approaches to learning about ACC and Cohousing, they both moved forward to become actively involved Associates and within two months both became Equity members, even with the extra hurdles the pandemic presented in connecting with the ACC community. |

Maggie’s Experience: I had explored Cohousing communities in the Bay Area, and considered this type of living for the past ten years or so. I liked the idea of sharing and living in a community but I had not yet researched the details. Now I participate in ACC development activities and help grow the community while learning how we plan to live together. My rationale for joining a community like Adams Creek Cohousing is to live with individuals that will expand my heart and home for the next phase of my life. |

Marilyn’s Experience: On the other hand I was not familiar with Cohousing at all. I had a practical approach and came across the ACC website while exploring housing options around Portland, where my grandkids live. In January I literally hopped on a plane to visit ACC and was so impressed by the concept, vision and the welcoming members that I met, that I drove back from Colorado a few weeks later (in blowing snow). |

M&M and their pets share a rental house: So Maggie and Marilyn decide to share their living together while waiting for ACC to be completed. Maggie had been living in a large two story house in White Salmon since summer 2019. It has an amazing view of the Columbia River and the town of Hood River. The timing was good to share the four bedrooms, three bath house, and Marilyn wanted to move to the area even before ACC construction began. The husky “pup” was going to be a bit of an experiment in “Cohousing” for Maggie’s 19 year old cat, Clementine, though. Maggie was a bit concerned that Clemmy might be unhappy about living with a dog, and that was indeed confirmed even though Ava was well-trained before joining the home. Ava respectfully wears a muzzle when she is on Clemmy’s turf and the two have made good progress in respecting each other’s space. |

Sharing Meals: Everyone has their own food preferences or even dietary requirements/restrictions. Luckily M&M both love to eat good food and enjoy cooking. Maggie brings fresh eggs and veggies from her sister Kathy’s farmette in Mosier. Marilyn tries to source foods locally, and feels so lucky to find so much locally grown, raised and gathered food stuffs available almost year round in this area. When we are finally in our ACC homes, sharing meals will be an important aspect of community living. We both look forward to creatively cooking and other adventures together. |
