Jan 20: “Southwestern Rock Calendars and Ancient Time Pieces” presentation by archaeologist Allen Dart, cosponsored by Arizona Humanities.

Native Americans in the U.S. Southwest developed sophisticated skills in astronomy and predicting the seasons, centuries before non-Indian peoples entered the region. In this presentation archaeologist Allen Dart discusses the petroglyphs at Picture Rocks, the architecture of the “Great House” at Arizona's Casa Grande Ruins, and other archaeological evidence of ancient southwestern astronomy and calendrical reckoning, and interprets how these discoveries may have related to ancient Native American rituals. This program is made possible by Arizona Humanities.  Visit

What Makes Snow?

Snow is composed of frozen water crystals, but because there is so much air surrounding each of those tiny crystals in the snowpack, most of the total volume of a snow layer is made up of air. We refer to the snow water equivalent of snow as the thickness of water that would result from melting a given layer of snow.

Forest Bathing

This wellness trend is based on the Japanese art of meditating in nature. It may have just hit stateside, but research has long touted green space's positive effects on blood pressure, mood and the immune system. Get in on the action by strolling along a nature trail, paying attention to the leaves crunching beneath your feet and observing woodland critters rustling in the trees. Live in a concrete jungle? A houseplant in every room will give you similar wellness-boosting effects.
