'360' Newsletter

Ramin Yazdanpanah, Ph.D. | August 17, 2023

This easy-to-digest weekly newsletter presents a resource for English language students, a professional development (PD) resource for educators, a quote to inspire, and a question to ponder. It really is the little things we do consistently that lead to great outcomes!

Social & emotional learning, feelings wheel, being kind to yourself

Happy '360' Thursday! Here are this week's resources, quote, and question.

Student Resource

The "Feelings Wheel" to Express Yourself and Expand Vocabulary

The "feelings wheel" is a visual resource that can be a very useful tool to expand your ability to express your feelings. Clearly communicating how we feel is important in our personal relationships, as well as in academic and professional settings.

Tip for students

Print or save an image of the feelings wheel on your phone and use it when you are writing an email or message. This will also help you to more clearly express yourself when you are speaking, and make you more aware of other people's emotions.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL) for ELLs: What Educators Need to Know

"What is social and emotional learning (SEL)? And how can schools ensure that English language learners (ELLs) are fully included and supported through SEL activities in the school setting? This article offers an introduction to SEL along with helpful resources from organizations such as the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). In addition, this article also shares ideas on how to ensure that ELLs are able to fully participate in SEL lessons and activities". For the article, click here.

The following video "SEL 101: What are the core competencies and key settings?" illustrates the CASEL SEL framework to bring social and emotional learning to your community.

Tip for teachers

Read over the article and the strategies that are provided for integrating SEL to support ELLs. Reflect on the needs of your students and colleagues and envision how you could collaborate to apply any of the strategies to your context.

Quote

"The way you treat yourself is one of the few things you control in life. There’s no reason to be anything but kind to yourself, in both your speech and your actions."

Toni Bernhard, Self-Care in an Uncertain World

Question

In your everyday and work life, how might you talk to yourself like you would speak to a dear friend or a student learning something new?

Until next week,

Dr. Yaz
