Mojo Holler News Summer 2024

Greetings, Holler Heads!

Well, wow! It has been a minute, but it feels great to revive this newsletter and give you a bunch of Mojo Holler updates! Missi here with new music, new shows, and lots more to tell, so let's get right to it:

New Song and Video! Maggie Went Down

Our new original song (and music video!) is called Maggie Went Down. John and I wrote this little tale about a woman who finally put her foot down. It’s a true folk song with shades of country & western.

You can stream and buy the track at our Bandcamp page, or stream it on Spotify, Apple Music and more.

We recorded at Page St Sound Lab with fantastic recording engineering by owner Frankie Piacentini. Chris Headland of Spectravision Production directed and filmed it all, producing two great videos. The song was mixed by Larry Crane of Jackpot! Recording Studio, who has been mixing our music for ten years now. Ryan Foster of Foster Mastering applied his magic, and the result is lush!

We’re really happy with the results and hope you enjoy watching and listening!

Behind the Scenes: The Making Of Maggie Went Down

Randy Yearout (L) on mandolin (or is it Randolin??); Missi Hasting (R) on washboard

John Baker on the Weissenborn

John played his homemade Weissenborn and the Strat- the combination of his guitars with Randy’s bass and the mandolin gives the song a rich texture. Missi played cajon, washboard, acoustic guitar, glockenspiel, egg shaker, claps, etc. With three part vocal harmonies, it’s a neat layering of folk elements, and because of that, we wanted a short “Making Of” video to pull back the curtain and show you a bit of that process:

One Year Hollersary: Randy Yearout

Randy Yearout

Randy Yearout joined Mojo Holler in July 2023 as our bass player, along with the occasional mandolin, acoustic guitars, harmonica, and (gasp!) banjo. He's a fantastic multi-instrumentalist who has a storied history in music making. We hit the ground running last summer and have performed 36 shows together so far. We are thrilled to be making music with him. If you haven’t caught a Mojo Holler show lately, come check us out this summer.
