The One Star Goodnight

Rate this book
Jack Dooley feels stuck in small-time, southern-fried college town Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He wants out, but he's trapped by his family, his band, and his apathy. One day, Jack's golden ticket appears: an investigation for his uncle that might just score enough cash to give Jack the kick in the pants he needs to leave. Trouble is, this job will propel Jack into a maze of corporate espionage, double-crosses, and ultimately, revenge. Set against seldom seen corners of the Deep South, The One Star Goodnight tours a rich cast of characters in its examination of Mississippi culture, Dixie crime, and self-deception. Never underestimate a redneck.

A 5-star Review for The One Star Goodnight: Author Christopher Dufour swung for the fences in his debut novel, The One Star Goodnight, and by all accounts he knocked it out of the park. Dufour crafted a page turner full of mystery, intrigue, and suspense, set in the colorful world of the deep south. As a reader from the extreme northern part of the country, The One Star Goodnight provided an excellent look into the culture and idioms of the south. Dufour has a special talent for writing compelling dialogue scenes, reminiscent of the dialogue scenes from some of Aaron Sorkin’s famous works. Dufour’s protagonist, Jack Dooley, is one of those memorable characters who could at times be seen as both a hero (fearlessly avenging an assault on his uncle by going right at the perpetrator) and as an anti-hero (using and abusing his friends for his own purposes – although Jack does have enough self-awareness to know he is taking advantage of his friends and their positions). It’ll be fun to see how Jack grows in the years ahead in what will hopefully be a long running series. There were some other remarkable characters in the book, a favorite being Doc Faller. Two of the most memorable scenes in the book with Jack and Doc involved a racquetball session and boxing lesson where the popular ol’ Doc taught Jack a thing or two. Also enjoyed the comic book chemistry and bromance Jack had with his friend, Rick — Batman and Superman to the core. The One Star Goodnight is a must read for anyone looking to get lost in a page-turning mystery/noir book set in the south. Seems to be nothing but blue skies ahead for Christopher Dufour and Jack Dooley.

This is a fun read. An early glimpse into the beginning of a character for which there is, surely, much more to come. I look forward to reading the next adventure, and seeing what happens in Fort Worth.
