COVID-19 Pauses Recycling Activities

The first coronavirus case in Haiti was detected on March 19th. As of today, March 28th, only 8 cases have been reported - and no deaths. Blada says, "Haitians are feeling very blessed because of the time that coronavirus took to reach Haiti. While they were counting infected cases in the Dominican Republic, it took weeks before there were any diagnosed cases in Haiti." However, the country is taking the outbreak seriously. Schools are closed, business activities are slowly stopping, and a curfew has been put in place.

Here at KBR, we're still trying to decide on how to move through this period together. We agreed to close the recycling operations for now. But we're now talking about finding ways to continue supporting our communities while making sure that we’re staying safe. Our current plan is to use the education branch of Kay Blada Recycling to help spread the word about coronavirus (COVID-19). The government has designed flyers and brochures listing the appropriate precautions, so we plan on passing those out to people. Hopefully, that will help keep everyone reminded and informed. Our focus will be on the remote areas, where people have not yet heard of nor fully understand what coronavirus is.

Students in Hinche Visit Kay Blada

Before the schools were closed, school children began coming on field trips to Kay Blada. We took them to the recycling center, to allow the kids to see recycling in action. Unfortunately, all of our 7 schools did not have a chance to take the trip. We are hoping that we can continue with this initiative when COVID-19 is under control. Each Friday, one class will visit the facility to learn about how recycling works and what they can do to protect the environment.

As Volunteers Self-Quarantine, Grant Writing Continues

Kay Blada Recycling is always working towards securing reliable funding and applying for grants. We are very grateful to have a new board member who is willing to take on grant writing- of the most challenging areas of Kay Blada Recycling. This year, our main goal is to increase the volume of plastics that we collect and recycle, allowing KBR to be able to work with international buyers. To be able to export recycled plastic on an international scale, besides increasing the volume, we also need better equipment to process our materials. That is why we are working hard to applying for grants to fund our huge projects. Grant support will also allow us to increase the salaries of our employees, continue improving our current facility, and securely fund our education program for years to come. Many thanks to our fabulous volunteers!

As always, thank you for everything you do to support us.
