Joyce Without Borders

2019 North American James Joyce Symposium

Mexico City, June 12-16

Joyce in Mexico City is getting very close!

Joyce Without Borders is pleased to announce that César Salgado, of the University of Texas, Austin, has agreed to deliver a keynote at the Symposium at 11:00 AM, Saturday, June 15. Please consult the website here for more information about him and all our special guests.

We are also extremely proud to announce that, as a special sponsorship, the International James Joyce Foundation has awarded four scholarships to help graduate students attend the Symposium. Fifteen applications of extremely high academic quality were submitted. The following four, listed in alphabetical order by surname, were chosen by the IJJF for their outstanding merit:

Leide Daiane de Almeida Oliveira, Universidad Federal de Santa Catarina, Brazil

“Finnegans Wake and the Theory of Epiphany: Reflections on Translation” (Panel 6.5)

Zoe Hughes, University of Chicago, USA

“Towards a Playful Reading Practice or Gaming at Finnegans Wake” (Panel 7.3)

Maisie Ridgway, University of Sussex, England

"Joyce the Technician: Algorithms and Autopoiesis in Finnegans Wake" (Panel 3.4)

Emma-Louise Silva, University of Antwerp, Belgium

“The Mind Without Borders: Cognitive and Affective Scaffolding in ‘Lotus Eaters’” (Panel 9.3)

We extend our heartfelt felicitations to the grantees, whom we have listed on our website; we also sincerely thank all those who applied, as well as those professors who wrote letters of recommendation. We thank the IJJF for its extraordinary generosity.

Attendees: please read the following IMPORTANT NOTICES:

1) Chairs. Our website has been updated to include a new page with the Protocol for Chairs. If you are chairing a panel, it is imperative that you read this text carefully and contact your fellow panelists as soon as possible.

2) Banquet. The extended deadline for purchasing banquet tickets is this Wednesday, June 5, 11 am, CST. Please note Joyce Without Borders will provide ticket holders free bus transportation from CASUL to the Museo Nacional de Antropología leaving at 17:45 hours on Saturday, June 15.

3) Vegetarian Banquet Reservation. In order to reserve a vegetarian meal for the banquet under your name, please obtain this free complement to your previously purchased JWB banquet ticket. You must present this ticket along with your banquet ticket (digital versions OK).

4) Day Pass. The Organizing Committee has authorized a Day Pass option for members of the general public. Day Pass holders will have access to all activities in CASUL, and will be allowed to enter sessions and presentations starting five minutes before they begin. Please note: attendees who have paid the Faculty or Discount Rate will have priority access to all sessions and presentations, as long as they arrive more than five minutes early.

5) Registration. If you are planning to attend but have not yet registered, we ask that you do so before the Symposium begins. If you are uncertain whether you have registered, please check that you received an email confirmation with the subject "Thank you for registering for Joyce Without Borders!" If not, then please check your spam folder and, if necessary, send a query to joycewithoutborders@gmail.com. If you will not attend, please notify us at your earliest convenience.

6) Hotels. The Hotel Royal Reforma can no longer guarantee the preferential Symposium rate. The Hotel NH Collection Reforma still offers the preferential rate for reservations within the June 10-18 period, but will not do so much longer, so please act quickly if you wish to stay there. If you have an issue communicating with the NH, please let us know so we can facilitate. Both hotels are situated close to the CASUL venue (a 9-minute walk), and are across the street from each other. When walking between the hotels and CASUL, to avoid confusion, we strongly recommend making just one turn at the corner of Liverpool and Calle de Niza; the latter is an extension of Orizaba, starting one block south of Liverpool. You can see the route on the maps here; CASUL is located at Orizaba 24, corner with Puebla.

7) Updated Program. The program is about to be finalized, but please consult the latest version here to check that all is well; if you point out something needing to be fixed within the next day or so, it should make it into the printed version.

8) Scholarly books. We have received requests to make available for sale scholarly books and flyers pertinent to Joyce studies. There will be a table in CASUL where registered attendees may display such items as of Friday, June 14, free of charge. If you are interested, please send an email in advance to joycewithoutborders@gmail.com.

9) Travel. As you prepare to visit Mexico City, we do encourage you to explore the Travel Tips section of our website. You will find great travel journalism there, and much useful information for your trip (for example, how best to take an airport taxi to your accommodations).

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone in ten days time!
