Black Philanthropy Month

August is Black Philanthropy Month (BPM). BPM is a global celebration and concerted campaign to elevate African-descent giving. Created by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland and the Pan-African Women's Philanthropy Network (PAWPNet), BPM launched in 2011 to commemorate the United Nations Year and Decade of People of African Descent. This year's theme is "For 2024, BPM is activating contemporary Afro-futurism to help our Movement throughout the US and worldwide imagine and co-create a more powerful future for Black giving and community finance in general."

Time, talent, treasure, and testimony are the four T's of philanthropy, which are assets that can be used to accomplish philanthropic goals:

Time

Whether you have 10 hours to give or 100 hours, your time is valuable. You can give of your time by volunteering on our board; joining one of our committees (Membership & Events and/or Development & Finance).

Talent

Sharing your skills and knowledge is critical to Collective 365's mission. You can give of your talent by volunteering to assist our grant applicants with their capacity building needs. For example, a social media expert providing 20 hours of consulting on social media strategy to our grant applicants. Another example is, an accountant serving as our Board treasurer.

Treasure

This is the one most people associate with philanthropy. Treasure speaks to giving in a financial capacity. We know most folks do not have the ability to write a million dollar check, but at Collective 365 we value a $10 per month donation the same as a $100 per month donation. Give what you can, when you can.

Testimony

We believe that Black & Brown folks are experts because of their live experiences. We invite folks to use their testimony to heal and grow our communities. Your voice and story have power and we are excited to have the opportunity to elevate, celebrate and invest in them.

Grant Announcement

In less than 28 days, the application will be live for the Rest & Joy Fund. Shout out to the Advisory Board, Collective 365 Board, and donors who made this possible.

Mark your calendars, tell a friend, post on social media because you do not want to miss this opportunity!

The Rest & Joy fund was established to prioritize mental health and making rest & joy accessible and approachable for Black & Brown folks in DC, MD and VA. The Rest & Joy fund is a collaboration between The Mental Health Emergency Fund and Collective 365. We are funding access to things such as, but not limited to: therapy, sabbaticals/paid time off, travel & retreats.

Just as Collective 365 celebrates and invests in the work of Black and Brown communities, we must also actively invest and elevate the rest and joy of Black and Brown folks. The work cannot be done effectively and sustainably without rest.

Rest is a part of the work!

The Rest & Joy Fund selection process operates on trust-based philanthropy model, which means we trust applicants to use the money to do what they see best to achieve rest and joy. To learn more about the fund such as qualifications and selection process, click here.

Podcast Alert!

In July we had the opportunity to be on The Mental Health Emergency Fund Podcast, which is hosted by the CEO/founder of The Mental Health Emergency Fund, Jessica Smith.

We discussed the Rest & Joy Fund which launches this month. Jessica is also on the advisory board of the Rest & Joy Fund and her organization is a collaborator of the Fund. Shoutout to her, again, for the $10,000 donation!

July is Minority Mental Health Month

While we do not love the word minority (because we are the global majority), we do want to highlight this awareness month given we are about to launch our Rest & Joy Fund. The purpose of Minority Mental Health Month is to raise awareness about the unique challenges that affect the mental health of racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations.

Below are some resources for mental health support:

And remember, mental health support is not just therapy...it is whatever you determine will help improve your mental health!
