HENSMAN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS After 11 long years away, the Hensman Club Champs were back and they certainly went off with a bang! With 84 players competing in 123 matches over 5 days, a return to the past was celebrated with some terrific competition including the Men's Championship Singles coming down to a killer tie-break between our coaches, finally ending with Conor Smith finishing 7-6, 2-6, 10-8 over Adam Napier. Huge thanks to John Di Noto for organising the tournament, and to his merry band of helpers who scored, officiated, supervised and otherwise just had fun and helped out at the games! MEMBER PROFILE BOB WEGNER Bob recently celebrated his 80th birthday on the same day as Casey Dellacqua and Daniil Medvedev, although he's got a few years on them both. Bob has lived all over WA in those 80 years: first, growing up in Swanbourne where his father owned a newsagency, next Mullewa and the family hotel, and then to Geraldton where, as a border at the High School, he was introduced to tennis. His working life started with the ANZ Bank which included a stint in Beverley. He progressed to the Prudential Insurance Company and Hawkstone Minerals during WA’s nickel boom and then on to Culley’s Tearooms in Fremantle where he partnered with long-time friend Darryl Culley in this award winning, local business. He remained there for 35 years and recently helped them celebrate their own centenary! Bob joined Hensman Park Tennis Club over 30 years ago after buying a house on Coode Street, just opposite the Club. He remembers former Club Coach and fellow long-time member Keith Begley 'testing' his tennis potential as a prospective member. With the nod of approval from Keith, he soon became a popular member who went on to great success with doubles partner Barry Bogaards in Beverley and Brookton. He is also a member of Cottesloe Tennis Club where he continues to play most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Bob is also a keen swimmer, having completed 8 Rottnest Channel Swims. He played Aussie Rules football for Beverley and Collegians, and was an inaugural member of the Fremantle Football Club, still supporting the Dockers today. Bob and Margaret Coulthard, a former CEO of the 500 Club, have been married for a blissful 13 years. Their combined family comprises 4 daughters, and 10 grandchildren - 9 of whom are boys! Bob and Marg have travelled extensively over the years - Italy & Croatia being his favourite destinations to date. As a regular Wednesday afternoon tennis player, Bob joins over a dozen octogenarian members in our Club. He still plays a good game of tennis which he thoroughly enjoys for the fitness, competitive spirit and camaraderie. Congratulations on your 80th birthday, Bob! |
