Dear Colleague, As we approach the end of 2022, at CCUK we are very happy to reflect on a very successful year with rapid growth in our membership and having hosted or participated in a series of well-attended events. We would like to thank all those companies who have joined/re-joined CCUK this year. Please go to our blog for our CCUK year in review.
Most recently we hosted a webinar with a Spotlight on China in which we covered product and efficacy claims and compliance, export advice and regulatory landscape as well as market trends. The recording is available here. Our booth at SCS Formulate had lots of visitors over the two days with many companies interested in what a Cluster is and our role in the sector. We are pleased to introduce Biomara and Leyton as new members this month and Beauty Product Development and Hapii who joined CCUK after the show. In 2023 we will be holding more in person events including a members AGM and more networking events. We wish you peace and joy over the festive season and look forward to seeing you in 2023. Merry Christmas, Kirsty, Jane, Gill, Alastair and Katerina |

Biomara is a Scotland-based biotechnology start-up aiming to produce high-purity and high-bioactive extracts from ocean-farmed seaweed. BioMara is researching its innovative biorefinery concept through laboratory-based experimentation and validations before moving to a commercial scale. The BioMara biorefinery development optimises for the production of high-purity, consistent, traceable and sustainable seaweed extracts with scientifically proven credentials. Partnerships with UK-based seaweed biomass suppliers form the backbone of BioMara’s strategy because reliable, high-quality, traceable biomass supply will be necessary to scale supporting the emerging UK seaweed industry. BioMara’s foundational strategy is to leverage scientifically based research to develop premium products to meet the increased global demand for high-purity, healthy, natural, bioactive solutions. As such, the technical team is developing innovative advanced manufacturing technologies in-house and in ongoing research partnerships with UK universities. Research and development efforts focus on testing BioMara’s processes for continuous production of valuable, sustainable, high-purity and consistent products using traceable UK feedstocks. BioMara’s bioactive product range will include specialised products that have been studied and verified for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. BioMara is working to help grow the nascent UK seaweed industry by working with suppliers, coastal communities, academic institutions, and industry players in a thriving UK blue bioeconomy. Stimulating job creation and income diversification opportunities will have a significant social and economic impact. BioMara’s underlying purpose is to effect environmental benefits, including ocean regeneration and the creation of fish habitats. Sustainable UK seaweed industry development supports UN Sustainable Development Goals such as climate action and life below water. Please contact Jay Dignan for more information |

Gill presented the final report from the CCUK Education and Skills group survey at the Inform session on Nov 16th at Formulate. With 160 responses across a wide age range, the key take home messages are: Awareness of careers in the industry is improving - younger people are already passionate about getting into the industry and they will do more to research options for training and future careers. There still remains a gap amongst young people who may not have considered that a career in the industry is something for them. Those in the industry and also in local authority teams could do more to promote STEM careers in the industry.
Moving forward, we advocate a UK-wide joined up approach to growing awareness of careers in the cosmetics and beauty industry, especially in STEM subjects. This could take the form of tool kits for schools/colleges; a dedicated industry careers fair and generally to improve access to online information and resources to help in the promotion of the sector as a great place to work – as those who are already employed told us so in our survey. |

CCUK attended the 8th Anti Ageing in Skin Care conference in London on 29th and 30th November. Ageing research is seen by the beauty industry to be vital in the nation's efforts to help promote a long and healthy life with healthy ageing and optimum well being now as important as reversing the signs of ageing. With a growing proportion of the population going to be over 60 in the coming decade, maintaining healthy skin is one of the important goals of consumers who understand that they need to approach this both from within (diet/supplements) and from a great skin and hair care regime. We will be carrying this theme into a workshop on Healthy Ageing and Well-being next year. |
