SLVEC Signs Letter to Protect Migratory Birds With the turning of the season, snow is melting, birds are singing, and flowers are blooming. Spring is here at last. The beauty of this thawing Valley is truly revealed with the blossoming of spring. The SLV Ecosystem Council honors the beauty of nature by working hard to protect migratory bird species. Last month, we joined 252 environmental organizations from across the country in signing a letter to protect migratory birds. The letter was submitted to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service asking to revise policy within the current Migratory Bird Treaty Act that does not effectively protect bird populations. Supporting these revisions gives hope to future bird species that are already suffering grave impacts from climate change--such as habitat loss and severe weather events. |

Species like the Snowy Plover (left) and Northern Pintail (right) all depend on SLV habitat during migration. |

New Report: The San Luis Valley as a Critical Stopover During Bird Migration With the help of local biologists and ornithologists, SLVEC has complied an in-depth report on the significance of the SLV as a migratory stopover for birds. Learn about some of the region's most productive habitats, the birds that they attract, and why these ecosystems are so vulnerable! This report serves as an educational piece to further dismantle Renewable Water Resource's claim that exporting 22,000 acres of feet of water each year will be a "Win-Win." In fact, wildlife and the habitats that sustain them would be the biggest losers. Protect SLV Water, Protect SLV Life! |

Let's Get Outside Together! SLVEC is planning several outdoor events for 2021! Serving as both a recreational and educational experience, we are designing events that bring our community into greater awareness and awe of the natural world. Hikes, informative talks, and field trips are all within our plans. If you have a suggestion or interest in being on our list for these events, please contact info@slvec.org |
