CFK Featured Athlete Andrew Zhenr!

Age: 29

Date Started: 6/10/2018

Background Information

  • Where are you from? Southern California
  • Family? One brother, parents all in Southern California
  • Where do you work? I’m a resident physician with Western Michigan, so I work out of both Bronson and Borgess.
  • What do you do for fun/hobbies? I play video games, cook, and watch movies
  • What’s your favorite food? Mom’s cooking

What is your athletic background?

I used to swim and play water polo in high school, then I did a lot of body building and non-Olympic weightlifting in college. Other than that, there was generic biking, hiking, and some beer league soccer, floor hockey, and kickball.

What were a few of your goals when you started at CrossFit Kalamazoo?

I wanted to maintain fitness and lose some weight.

What are some newer goals you have set for yourself in 2020?  Work on cardiovascular endurance and continue losing weight.

What keeps you coming back to CrossFit Kalamazoo?

The community is great, the gym is awesome; it’s always clean and the equipment is top notch.

What do you do on days when you don’t “feel” like going to the gym? What motivates you?

We have a rower at home and I try to do a little cardio when we are unable to make the gym. Other times if I’m busy with work I try to use the stairs more.

How has CrossFit Kalamazoo changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?

CFK has helped me maintain my fitness, has provided an outlet for stress relief and mental decompression.

If someone asked you “What is CrossFit Kalamazoo” how would you answer?

CFK is a great CrossFit gym that provides a great environment to learn new skills while getting fit and meeting new people.

What advice would you give someone walking into CrossFit Kalamazoo for the first time?

CrossFit is hard and it’s intimidating learning all the movements but keep with it and gets better.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement? Snatch. It requires a lot of strength, mobility, and coordination all in one.

What is your least favorite CrossFit movement? And why? Hand stand push ups; I think it puts a lot of strain on the neck and wrists. It is good for getting shoulder strength and requires coordination but I think push presses focus on similar muscle groups.

Tell us something that we would be surprised to know about you?

I’m pretty good at cooking Italian food despite my heritage and my mom teaching me traditional cuisine from a young age.

If you could go on a road trip with any person (dead or alive), who would you choose and where would you go?  Why? Other than Jess, my wife, I would probably pick Dominik Hasek, former goalie of the Buffalo Sabres to pick his brain during a trip through the Swiss Alps.

In 10 words or less, what does CrossFit Kalamazoo mean to you?

Fun family fitness!

"Nice job, Andrew!  I am always impressed by Andrew's dedication to keeping fit.  Even though Andrew has a constantly changing and hectic schedule in the medical field, he still manages to get his workouts in.  Working out at CFK is not always possible for Andrew but that does not keep him from getting in some great fitness at home.  Thank you, Andrew, for your hard work during this Covid crises and thank you for your dedication to fitness!" - Coach Tim
