NCAT - BUILDING WORKS - STAYING ON TARGET Construction of the new Admin and Dance facilities is on target with all the steel framing completed. The builders have started doing the roofing work and external work to close off the areas. Shortly the builders will be moving their sheds to the back of the college in preparation for the work that will need to be done to install walls, roofs etc |

At the same time as this construction is happening on the new buildings, they have another team removing the old external blue tiles on B and C wings and replacing them with a Colorbond exterior. Once the exterior is cladded, this latter team will move on removing any window that is in poor condition or does not work and then painting them, putting in new downpipes and completing other work to bring the old building up to scratch. MULTIMEDIA - CERTIFICATE III I originally wanted to go to NCAT because I would be able to do something I enjoyed. I love programming and designing with various programs on the computer, creating anything from animations to websites, all things I want to pursue as a career. I had heard from friends that NCAT was an amazing school and it would allow me to do something I enjoyed and practice for my future career choice. So I had to go and see for myself and I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. Last year when I attended my first lesson at NCAT, I was blown away at how welcoming and friendly everyone was. At first, I didn’t know anyone so I was a little nervous. After getting to know some people that I now call close friends, I feel part of the NCAT community. The trainers here are amazing. They gave me advice when I asked for it and helped me understand the content when, at first, I didn’t. Not once have I felt excluded in class and as a whole at NCAT Image (below) Ethan Pearce |

I’ve been telling all my friends at my base school about NCAT constantly, to the point that some of my friends want to see what this school has to offer them. Since we all love animating and others love programming, I recommended NCAT as a place to learn and create even more friendships. My love for programming and drawing is constantly being satisfied when I sit down and do the class work. Being able to draw and explain what I’m drawing, as well as why, in my visual diary. As well as being able to program now I’m building a website. Not once has my VET course never stopped giving to help please my desire to program and draw. WHAT THE STUDENTS SAY I’ve enjoyed this class a lot through the one and a half years I’ve been studying in it. I could never really get my head around coding and used to hate it but my trainer explained it in a way that I could really understand and now really enjoy it. I have always really loved animation and have always wanted to learn how to do it, now this course has allowed me to get started learning animation. What made you choose to come to NCAT? I was amazed that there was a school in Melbourne specifically for all the things I enjoy doing and want to do in the future. I’m currently also studying CERT III Screen and Media which has been very enjoyable. I had the option of dropping one of the vet programs but I enjoy both of them too much to drop one of them. |

What do you think about the study environment at NCAT? Everyone at NCAT is here because they want to be here, we’re all very passionate about our work and look forward to coming to class. Our trainers are very friendly and know how to explain things in ways we will understand. NCAT doesn’t have the cliquey atmosphere I’ve found in other schools. AUTOMOTIVE STUDIES A Great Fun Career Path People think going into automotive work is just about being a mechanic. It’s not. It can lead to being a manager, working in reception, owning a private workshop or dealership. It can lead to working in spare parts or in automotive manufacturing. It can also lead to working overseas as Australian mechanics are highly regarded because of their training. The number of female apprentices in the area is growing. Claude D’Orazio, NCAT Auto trainer, has 30-years industry experience. Students love working on the variety of new car models and engines in our Auto Workshop. Julian Marconato a Year 11 Parade Preston Campus student attends NCAT Wednesday mornings for four hours to learn automotive skills and knowledge. Julian says “Everyone’s fantastic and the teachers are really helpful.” Michaela Elouath an NCAT Year 10 Arts student studies Media, Visual Arts and the Certificate II in Auto. Michaela says “Auto is really good, it helps you learn some basic facts and skills about cars.” Joel Blair and other Year 10 Technology students get hands on experience in Carpentry, Electrotech, Engineering and Design. Joel has opted to pursue the Auto area in more depth by enrolling in Certificate II Automotive Vocational Preparation. Next year if wants he will have the opportunity to try a different trade area. |

ARTWORK SHORTLISTED Congratulations to Elizabeth Hall, a second year student in our Certificate II in Visual Art course, who has been shortlisted for her artwork pictured here in the Graphite Preston Freedom Developers Image competition. Lizzie entered the competition as an NCAT part-time student and if selected as the winner will see her work be printed 15 meters high on the side of a new building here in Preston, and be awarded $10,000. THE FULL CIRCLE We love telling stories about our NCAT students, and we love this one. Travis Kealey was an Engineering and Building Pre-apprenticeship student at NCAT in 2012. Our Principal often tells the story of one of our Engineering students who made a 3D printing machine with one of the college 3D printers and some metal parts made on the lathes. Well that was Travis! He went on to an apprenticeship at Sutton Tools one of NCAT’s long standing industry partners and supporters. Last week Travis arrived at NCAT to move our HAAS TL1 3D from the CNC room into the Engineering Workshop. He was warmly greeted by our Engineering trainers. MUSIC INDUSTRY CERT III On Wednesday 9th May, Certificate III in Music Industry students performed a stunning showcase of their original music collaborations for their songwriting assessments. The line-up comprised everything from indie punk to folk pop, solo singer songwriters to seven piece hip-hop outfits. Sound production students set up an impressive sound system for the night and a stunning lighting display. DANCE COURSES YR 10 Dance, VCE Dance & VCE VET (CUA20113 Certificate II in Dance)
Time: Starting in Year 10 the NCAT Dance program goes over three years and is a combination of VET and VCE scored and non-scored. Or entry at any year level (Year 11 or 12). Entry to the college is via audition only.
Aims: The purpose of dance at NCAT is to develop student’s technique and versatility through a variety of dance styles by participating in weekly technique classes; gaining choreographic experience and performance experience across a range of styles. Support students in audition preparation and a career in dance alongside a mainstream academic program. | | |

Subjects: Dance Styles include Jazz/Commercial Jazz, Contemporary/Lyrical, Musical Theatre and Ballet. Classes include Choreographic and Structured improvisation skill development. PERFORMANCE VCAL GROUP This is our Performance VCAL group in the recording studio. The session was based around set up for live recording production. Our wonderful Zac Lister was leading the session with students learning about communication between the recording booth and the performers. |

The target was to obtain the best sound for recording a snare drum. Mic techniques and methods of reducing “ping” were discussed to obtain the desired tone. Great job done by our in house volunteer drummer Tarsh Piccioni and Jack Lyall on the desk. |

CERTIFICATE IV INSTRUMENT MAKING As part of the students’ study into electric Guitar design, we were very lucky to have Dan Burke from DVB Instruments present. The Cert IV students have spent the last few weeks of classes looking at the evolution of electric guitars and pickups. We began this unit by studying how culture has driven the development of early electrics, who were the main movers and shakers and why some models have maintained their presence for so long. To follow up after a brief introduction to types of pickups, Dan (a highly-experienced repairer) came in a presented an overview of electronics for guitar design and then went onto a second practical workshop to demonstrate the knowledge he’d imparted the previous week. |

Using a range of different pickups, tone controls and wiring variations, Dan gave a totally engaging session so students could hear the differences live. There were plenty of great soldering technique tips and very generously offered up ongoing support for the students’ custom builds. Not only were these highly informative sessions, but also gave the students a newfound confidence to experiment without fear. Thanks Dan. You were a hit! |
