Although the man who often gets credit for discovering America never actually set foot in the U.S., he accomplished something that seemed impossible. He set out into unknown waters where others thought he might fall off the side of a flat earth, be eaten by sea monsters, or die of starvation before he reached land.
There is an old story of Columbus having dinner with some rich men after his first voyage. When the men began to mock his achievement, Columbus pulled out an egg and asked them if they could balance it an its end. Each man claimed it to be impossible. Columbus then tapped the egg and slightly broke the shell. He made the egg stand on its end and accomplished the “impossible” once again. Columbus told the men that the impossible is possible when someone shows you how.
As we celebrate the birthday of the United States, we remember the history, the sacrifices, and the impossibilities made possible. And we also remember that the freedoms available in this country would not exist without its foundations being established as “one nation under God”.
On this Independence Day, we praise God that America is still a free country. And even more, we praise Him for our freedom in Christ, and remember it is the Lord who makes the impossible possible.
