This Mother's Day, Honor All Mothers with a Gift of a Bright Future for a Child!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

There is a Swahili proverb, “Mama ndiye kichwa cha nyumba” which means “Mother is the captain of the family.” And we at REACH Shirati believe that strong families make for strong communities. What better way to show your love and appreciation for the mothers in your life than to give a gift of bright futures through REACH Shirati?  Our projects support mothers in the Shirati area in so many ways, so celebrate mothers around the world with us!

Why is Education the Answer?

A solid education gives girls and women information and skills for life. Research shows that the longer a girl in Shirati stays in school, the later she has her first pregnancy. And delaying pregnancy makes for a healthier pregnancy, an easier delivery, and a healthier baby. The transition from primary school to secondary school is particularly important, because in rural Tanzania, this could be a typical time in a young girl's life when she would marry and start a family. This year, ALL of the girls in our first graduating class VII passed the National Exam and are currently enrolled in secondary school! They are pursuing their education and see a bright future ahead so they have the opportunity to delay getting married and starting their families until after  they complete their education.

Maternal Health

Thanks to our Hospital Food Project, 50 to 60 nutritious meals are served daily at Shirati Hospital. We provide one meal a day to ALL patients on the children's and maternity ward - typically housing 20 pregnant women and new mothers! Without this support, many women would go through labor and delivery with no food, making it more difficult for these new mothers to nurse their babies. In fact, according to Dr. Chirangi, the Chief Medical Officer at Shirati Hospital, because the community knows that food is provided for women in labor and delivery, more women choose to come to the hospital, rather than deliver at home!

Did You Know?

Books are very valuble in Tanzanian schools. Indeed, students in many rural under-resourced government schools don't have their own books and will share the same book with other students. We dedicate resources to ensure every one of our students has their own text book, and for the most needy students supported by our scholarships, these books are such a source of pride.

Honoring Our Mother!

In a way, our history starts with one brave mother's vision for a better future for her far away community. Christine Nyanda Chacha knew the education that changed the path of her own life, could do the same for so many other children. On this Mother's Day, we honor her vision and continue the work she started because as she often reminded us, " 'Little by little, but steadily, we believe we can make a difference"
