GenerationPMTO News!

Check out what we're up to now

Issue #4                                                                                           February 2018

This month we enjoy celebrating our loved ones on Valentine’s Day as well as Black History Month. We found a quote by a leader, mentor and organizer within the civil rights movement, Ella Jo Baker. Her message carries a theme similar to our work in GenerationPMTO:

“Give light and people will find the way.”

Where we’ve been lately

In January, our trainers traveled to NYC during the first snowstorm of 2018 to conduct booster workshops with dedicated case planners working with birth parents in the foster care system.

Always FIMPing

Two teams attended a Fidelity of Implementation (FIMP) booster workshop designed to provide deep understanding of the model and strengthen skills needed to score the fidelity of work being done there.

The group in this photo is from the New York Foundling and JCCA. We are impressed by the hard work they’re doing with FIMP while juggling all of their other important responsibilities within their agencies!

Putting Data into Action!

Another workshop we conducted last month focused on one of our observational measures, the Family Interaction Brief Rating Scale (FIBRS). This measure is designed to be used by agency staff trained to rate parenting practices and child behavior observed during family visitations. The workshop focused on how to train staff within the agency to provide accurate ratings, whether or not they are trained in the parenting model.

Why is this important? Observations collected in a consistent way provide meaningful information about the skills parents are being taught by case planners and how child behavior changes between visitations. This can indicate how parents are doing in their groups and it may be used to influence reunification plans.

In Her Own Words

We received an inspiring video message about using incentive charts from a child in PMTO Denmark that we’d love to share with you.

Shine the Light on FIMP Central

In our newsletter last month, we explained how we monitor fidelity (via FIMP) to ensure that our model is being delivered as it was designed and proven to be effective. This month we want to shine the light on the tool our reliable fidelity teams use:  FIMP Central.

This secure online portal, developed and hosted by Tools for Research in the Netherlands, is used by teams around the world to view videos of GenerationPMTO sessions, input FIMP scores, and calculate team reliability.

Additionally, we use FIMP Central to measure each team’s reliability with the ISII Consensus FIMP Team via an annual test. For the test, each team reviews four 10- to 15-minute FIMPspots of GenerationPMTO as it is being delivered to families within an existing implementation site. We then use FIMP Central to calculate ICC and percent agreement to determine whether FIMP Team members are still reliable or need calibrating.

Our Director of Fidelity, Dr. Margrét Sigmarsdóttir of Iceland, monitors the whole system. This is how we know that the evidence-based parenting model being delivered in Norway, for example, is the same effective parenting model being delivered in Kansas, Michigan, and Iceland.

A Reminder:

Laura Rains and Luann Gray will be presenting at the 31st Annual Research & Policy Conference on Child, Adolescent, and Young Adult Behavioral Health in Tampa, Florida.

Their symposium will be on the morning of March 7th and provide an overview of GenerationPMTO implemented across contexts, cultures, and countries, with the state of Michigan as an exemplar of integrating an EBP into a system of care in multiple delivery systems, populations, and regions. For more details about the conference, including links to register, go to http://cmhconference.com/
