Where Leaders Come To Grow

Use Reflection To Grow You

Once the hustle and bustle of the holidays are over, many people get down time with family and friends. Before your downtime is over and you rush head long into 2018, take the time to reflect on the year gone by to set yourself up for success in 2018.

Leaders are learners; they continually grow.

Growth = Experience + Reflection.

With age does not necessarily come wisdom. So how do you become wise? You learn from your experiences....the good and the bad.

At the end of December, take some time for reflection. Here are some questions to help you get the most from your experiences.

What went well for me this year?

What experiences showed me where I need to grow?

What happened this year that showed me what I don't want?

What was I hoping to achieve that I did not get done?

What experiences showed me what I want more of?

What did I learn?

What made me laugh? (It might show you what you want more of?)

Where was I not engaged, but should have been?

What a-ha's did I have?

What am I taking away from this year?

Based on your reflection, what resonates with you that you can carry forward into the new year to make 2018 a more fulfilling year?

Don't assume you will automatically grow. Growing is very intentional. Finish the year strong with great reflection. Move into 2018 with intention and clarity.

To your continued growth....

Dana

Communication Tip

Have more conversations, not less.

Conversations define reality. The first job of a leader is to define reality. Conversations are a great way to do just that. Imagine you are looking at a mall directory. You see the dot with the words, "You Are Here." Answer "Where is here?" Answer that for yourself. Help others answer it too.

Converstions create clarity. It is important to have reality checks with employees to continually define "Where you are." What is the person struggling with? What do they need help with? What do they want to do more of in their role?

Stay in conversation with others to build rapport, trust and reveal the truth.

Leadership Is An Art

  by Max DePree

This is a quick read at only 148 pages. This is the first leadership book I read back in the 90's that got me hooked on the concept of making work places a better place by having great leadership.

Max DePree was an American business man passing away in August 2017 and was the son of D. J. DePree, founder of Herman Miller office furniture company.

HIGHLIGHT: This book can be opened at any point to begin reading.

THEME: As Mr. DePree says in his intro, "The book is about the art of leadership; liberating people to do what is required of them in the most effective and humane way possible."
