Washington, DC – June 26, 2017 - To our Donors, Supporters, and Friends, This year I am proud to share the tremendous progress Project Briggs, Inc. have made. We’ve had many important events that took place under our umbrella. I’d like to take the opportunity to talk about Project Briggs Inc. as a community organization and our commitment to community service, and the need why Project Briggs. Inc. belongs here. The word “community” can be defined as “a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.” I’ve also seen it defined as “a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.” - Abdur Rahim Briggs, President. We are in a special place and the communities in which we serve. We are committed to our philanthropy and supporting others. As a community leader, we play an important role not only in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland but also across many other states. Our commitment to community service and projects has over 50 years combined experience from the members of Project Briggs, Inc. Executive Baord. We know and appreciate the uniqueness of our marketplace. Providing services to help unmet needs in the community. By doing this the best we can through a positively different experience, we continue to grow; and that growth supports our affiliations. Our success also helps support the many important, hard-working organizations that make Project Briggs. Inc. such a special organization. Our projects have supported the homeless in Baltimore by providing over 200 brand new and gently used winter items, a successful launch of Project Briggs Inc., Mentorship for the HBCUs LGBT Safe organizations, #THEBOLDBRAVE30 Annual Community Service Reception, Pink Pumpkin Donation for American Cancer Society and Casa Ruby Annual Toiletry Drive Happy Hour for the Hispanic Bilingual Multicultural community for the homeless. We’ve build strong alliances through our Project Briggs, Inc. Monthly Newsletter, built Promotional Partnerships for Xcape Puerto Rico LGBT Arts & Culture Music Festival, Pre Black Pride Brunch Day Party with Urbane Society celebrating the 27th Annual DC Black Pride, Baltimore Pride, House-Music in New Jersey, Ski Trip Escape, Kingdom Covenant Ministries and in 2016 we gave away Thanksgiving Day baskets to needy families. Our donors, supporters and friends can feel confident in knowing 100% of all donations supports our projects, events, and initiatives. That is community service, that’s what we do and why we are here. The more donations we get the more support we’re able to provide to these worthy local causes. And we couldn’t do it alone. When we put out the call for help, you-our donors, supporters and friends, never cease to amaze us with your warm hearted generosity and caring spirit. “Project Briggs. Inc. provide an unusual, important opportunity for stakeholders on diverse issues to share experiences and formulate groundbreaking initiatives across a diverse set of crucial issues,” - Dr. Roshonda Contee-Keynote speaker at #THEBOLDBRAV30 Annual Community Service Reception. We would like to acknowledge generous financial contributions that make our work possible. Thanks to our supporters and donors. Project Briggs. Inc. is able to stimulate the fundamental change needed to strengthen the role of the communities in which we serve. Our Mission would not be possible without the following Supporters and Allies in the Greater Washington DC area and beyond: Waddie Grant - Blogger and Executive Producer at The G-Listed, McGregory Williams – President of Omega Entertainment DC, Gregory Douglas – Executive Producer of Xscape Puerto Rico, Dr. Keith R. Harley, Jr. - Owner of the Keith Harley Hair and Scalp Clinic, Ebone' F. Bell - Managing Editor of TAGG Magazine, Robert C. White, Jr. – At-Large DC City Councilmember, Muriel E. Dear Washingtonians, Since my first day in office, my Administration's top priority has been ensuring the safety and well-being of all DC residents. To combat violent crime in Washington, DC and keep our city safe and strong, during my first year in office, we put forth the Safer, Stronger DC plan, a comprehensive public safety agenda. Last year, after a full year of implementing the plan, DC saw a 10 percent decrease in all violent crime, with a 17 percent reduction in homicides and a 13 percent reduction in robberies. And midway through 2017, we continue to build on this progress. Compared to this time last year, DC has seen a 33 percent decrease in robberies, a 25 percent decrease in burglaries, and a 15 percent decrease in homicides. In total, violent crime is down 26 percent. There is more work to do, but this data shows tremendous progress. We have been able to make this progress in just two and half years by doubling down on our commitment to community policing, taking illegal guns off the streets, and working with non-law enforcement agencies to end cycles of violence. We have worked with our federal partners to improve DC's complex criminal justice system, and we continue to invest in programs that support returning citizens so that they can thrive in their communities. In short, we are building safer, stronger neighborhoods by taking a holistic approach to crime and violence and engaging the community in our work. Going forward, my Administration will not let up; this data is promising, but we can and must continue to improve. And we cannot do this work alone, which is why I will continue to invest in and support programs and initiatives that make it easier for residents in every ward to support our efforts and participate in activities that keep them safe - initiatives like the Private Security Camera Programs, the Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program, and Beat the Streets. Washington, DC has come a long way since I was a young girl growing up in North Michigan Park. Together, we will continue to build on our progress and ensure that our prosperity reaches all eight wards. Sincerely, Muriel E. Bowser |

Project Briggs, Inc. Community Ally DC Council Member At Large, Robert C.White, Jr. Introduces Innovative BEGIn Act to Drastically Increase Access to Early Child Development Programs |
Today, At-Large Councilmember Robert White introduced the Bolstering Early Growth Investment Amendment Act of 2017, or BEGIn Act, to significantly expand access to early childhood development programs for families across the District. White, the father of an infant daughter himself, said he wrote the bill with child care providers and policy experts to create a pipeline of new early care and education facilities for families of all incomes, make facilities easier to open and maintain, and stabilize the workforce in a field suffering from high turnover due to low wages. "Adding new early learning seats, especially for low-income families, is the single biggest step we can take in reducing the achievement gap and leveling the playing field for children that statistically never catch up to children from higher-income families," White stated. White added that, “Early childhood development is not professional babysitting, it is a significant educational investment that engages infants and toddlers, from ages zero to three, the time when 85% of core brain development occurs. This is the time when we can really start to cut away at the academic achievement gap.” White also stated that the business model for quality early care and development facilities is broken, with many providers not bringing in an income and infant and toddler instructors making only slightly above minimum wage. “Meanwhile,” White remarked, “with only 7,600 seats for over 22,000 children under the age of three in the District, parents are struggling to find quality child care for their children and are paying an average monthly cost of $1,800 per child for market-rate child care center tuition. Without aggressive steps from our government to expand child care and education facilities, we will continue to see the same outcomes and our children will suffer.” To read DC Council Member Robert C. White's Newsletter in its entirety, please click button below: |

This & That by: Michael Sainte-Andress "Intro" When Rahim Briggs presented me with the opportunity to do this column, I was surprised at his belief in my ability to do it and flattered that he thought I actually could. It is an excellent example of how faith and circumstance can create a tremendous possibility! I am a person of deep Christian faith and so I look at all the situations in my life as God’s way of communicating with me to move me in the direction for which I am intended. You know, when you pray and ask God to set you aright, you have no idea how it may actually be realized. Oftentimes we miss our blessings because they do not manifest in the manner that we expect them to. My primary prayer over the last several years has been for God to deliver me from the pain and suffering I have endured brought about by some extreme health challenges. I am 66 years old, HIV+ since 1986, diagnosed with hepatitis-C, type II diabetes, sciatica, sleep apnea, hypertension, rheumatoid arthritis and peripheral neuropathy in my hands and feet. I have undergone multiple amputations resulting in the the loss of both of my upper feet. As a result of these circumstances I began to descend into a morass of depression, self doubt, anguish and fear. I lost faith and began to despair about what was left for me to live for. Fortunately, I have strong family ties and a wonderful support system of friends who genuinely care about my well being and make a concerted effort to help keep me afloat. It is my acknowledgement of that blessing that has pulled me from the brink of certain self-destruction. I firmly believe that incidents in our lives are actually opportunities for us to learn certain lessons. I have always been a high energy person and a multi-tasker of the highest order; an overachiever. But things weren’t quite right in my life because I was too busy just being busy. God needed me to slow down and re-evaluate my life, to regroup and rethink where I was going and how I was going about doing it. But, I was deaf to the message and proceeded on my helter-skelter way of living. So, God got my attention by striking me down and forcing me to examine my circumstances and choices in life. I did not get it at first, but as I languished in hospital beds, a 2-month rehabilitation residence and greatly diminished physical mobility, I had lots of time to think and consider my circumstance-imposed introspection and self-reflection that helped me recognize that I needed to reclaim my life and set myself on a focused and purposeful path. I have always believed that I could be a serious writer. As a young child I wrote poems, essays and stories about what I witnessed in my life and loved the freedom and sense of total abandon it gave me. In high school I started a weekly newspaper chronicling student life and experiences (The Scorch Pad) and also wrote and directed the senior play and in college I had a column in the campus newspaper (The Lincolnian) called, “Chit Chat With the Kat,” which was my commentary on the life of being an African American student in the social revolution of the 60’s and 70’s in an historically black college and university (HBCU), Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. Writing gave me a sense of freedom and adventure that allowed me to explore my imagination and express myself without limitation or restrictions. What joy!!!!!!! So, I entreated God to dive me a sign and guide me to fulfilling this part of my life. Hence, Rahim and his presenting me with this splendid opportunity. The timing could not have been more apt. I will endeavor to share my thoughts, reflections, observations and points of view in a way that is provocative, insightful, entertaining, informative and in some ways inspirational. I want to convey my genuine concern about the quality of life we that we consider and to help move people to taking charge of their lives and becoming fierce advocates on their own behalf. So, get onboard with, “This & That.” Let me hear from you and lets engage in a social discord of interest and purpose. I fully accept this challenge and I look forward to the ensuing journey! Come fly with me!!!!!!! |

July 14, 2017 Trans military service members are at a major moment in their career. President Obama’s administration lifted the Medicare ban against paying for gender re-assignment surgery for current service members in 2014. They later set a deadline of July 1st, 2017 for our armed forces to accept transgender applicants. It has been delayed for six months under the administration of Donald Trump. In a memo obtained by the Washington Blade, Defense Secretary Mattis reportedly says, “Since becoming Secretary of Defense, I have emphasized that the Department of Defense must measure each policy decision against one critical standard: will the decision affect the readiness and lethality of the armed forces?” “Put another way, how will the decision affect the ability of America’s military forces to defend the Nation?” The transgender population makes up about 0.3 percent of the U.S. adult population, per the Washington Post. The Defense Department estimates as many as 7,000 active duty transgender troops already slay in our force of 1.3 million. The Military Times reports since Secretary Mattis took office in Janury he has stripped bathroom and locker room protections for transgender students attending Defense Department schools. Officials under him have also informed two transgender cadets attending Army and Air Force academies they would not receive commissions and not be allowed to serve on active duty. |

“Love in Leadership” Written by Purify Love/Tiffany Lancaster |
Far too many people think of themselves more higher than they ought to, forgetting who they are and the original pure goal. Titles and positions mean nothing if you have yet to master love with your brothers and sisters. The higher YAH(God in Hebrew) positions us, the more of an example that person must set before all character-wise. Our character is what people judge the most even when we don't speak any words. What do people say about you when your name comes up in conversation? What have you represented thus far that is exemplary and notable to those around you and that surround you. One may say..."I don't care what anyone says about me, or thinks about me"...but the truth is, if you are a leader, it does matter what people that are under your leadership think about you, not in terms of haters, or those that are jealous or envious of you, they are exempt and non-related to what I am speaking of...but those that are effected by your actions towards them, behavior patterns, and leadership of them. Can YAH trust you to lead in love, can he trust you to not lead out of your emotions, feelings, or opinions. Can he trust you to lead without forming cliques, a(LIE)ances, and teams that seek to desecrate people you deem in your own mind as "less than you" or that you feel, in your own mind may be "threat to you", (this does not apply to cases such as healthy political competition). In essence, image is EVERYTHING, and it determines how high you go, who will believe in you and support you, and also whether your name will leave a lasting impression for those that were assigned under your tutelage. Legacies are built and destroyed by the mouths of others...when you die, what will be said in the story and legacy of your life as read from the lips of those that surrounded you, your own comrades, constituents, co-workers, friends, family, significant other, spouse, and even your enemies. When your enemies can hate you but not say anything bad about you on your death bed, you have succeeded. Let your life be a light that testifies to LOVE. Nelson Ellis November 30, 1977 - July 8, 2017 "True Blood" Star Nelsan Ellis Dies at 39 |
Nelsan Ellis (November 30, 1977 – July 8, 2017) was an American film and television actor and playwright. He was well known for his role as Lafayette Reynolds in the HBO series True Blood, which he played from 2008 until the series' completion in 2014, and for starring as Bobby Byrd in the 2014 James Brown biopic Get on Up. In 2007, Ellis was cast as Lafayette Reynolds in the pilot for True Blood, as a short order cook at Merlotte's, a drug dealer, a member of Jason Stackhouse's road crew, and Tara Thornton's cousin. The pilot was shot in the early summer of 2007 and was officially ordered to series in August. Production on the series began later that fall. In casting, Alan Ball had concerns that the character's homosexuality would be a dominating trait, "because you don't want to bring in someone who's going to play that in a phony way". Nelsan Ellis says that it took him a few episodes to find the character. Ellis says that he based many of Lafayette's mannerisms on his mother and his sister, and that the costuming also helped him to get into character. He told the The Philadelphia Inquirer: "I have more makeup on than any of the females in the cast. Once they get me with the fake eyelashes and the eye makeup, I listen to some Rihanna and I'm there". The series premiered on September 7, 2008 and concluded on August 24, 2014, comprising seven seasons and 80 episodes. In 2008, Ellis received a Satellite Award from the International Press Academy for best supporting actor in a television series for his role as Lafayette Reynolds'. In 2009, he was nominated for a Scream Award for "Best Supporting Actor" for True Blood. In 2012, Ellis was cast as Martin Luther King, Jr. in a supporting performance in Lee Daniels' The Butler. The Butler received mostly positive reviews from critics On October 21, 2013, Ellis joined the cast of Get on Up, a biographical drama film about the life of singer James Brown. He portrayed Bobby Byrd, Brown's long-time friend. Get on Up was met with positive reviews from critics. Source: Wikipedia |

When Education Doesn't Seem to Pay Off by: Troy D. Lewis, II July 13, 2017 Since childhood, many students are groomed to look forward to college – a “guaranteed” pipeline toward the American Dream. College tours, in many school districts, begin in middle school and sometimes elementary. It’s never too early to expose students to opportunities to further their education. Throughout my career I have coordinated and implemented several college tours and information sessions/panels for future college goers. During these trips and sessions several questions are asked relative to classes, clubs and organizations, majors, campus life and how to finance higher education. One critical question students should always ask is what opportunities do most of alumni entertain after graduations. For many, it’s a choice between the workforce and graduate school. Which is the most important? The last year for undergraduate school is filled with next step planning. It’s during this time that some students assess their financial obligation to their education and troubleshoot ways and means to pay off their debt. Of the 44 million borrowers, Americans owe $1.4 trillion dollars in student loan debt which is $620 billion more than U.S. credit card debt.1 There was a 6% increase in student loan debt within the Class of 2016 owing $37K on average. It’s no wonder that the student loan delinquency rate is at 11.2% (90+ days delinquent) with an average monthly student loan payment of $351. As a newcomer to the workforce, it can be difficult to take on such a financial burden while establishing a new career post-graduation. But is it worth it? Consider the alterative. By not pursuing a higher education the prospects of high earning potential are minor save entrepreneurship, entertainment or some other form of high profile professional success. While taking on financial debt is not attractive neither is attempting to launch a career without a degree or two behind you. Today’s economy essentially requires bachelor’s and advanced degrees and, for the time being, it costs to learn. As the academy evolves and more students pour into college auditoriums it’s important for students to know the costs of college but more importantly how they will pay off any debt incurred. It’s simply the American way! **To Download Troy D. Lewis' July Article Click Button Below** |

May Financial Tips | Watu Jackson, Chief Executive Officer for W Financial Solutions, LLC. There's an age old saying when it comes to starting a new business and it goes “Fake it until you make it.” It seems to have bled over to the world of social media; and who isn't on social media these days. Just a few months ago a popular fashion blogger, Shaniqua Jordan, was charged with credit fraud in excess of $37,000. Attaining things should never be that serious, seriously! I mentioned this only to touch on the point that too many of us are living beyond our means. Do you really need that 24k drink shaker? Now let's not get it twisted (*returns back to professionalism), there is nothing wrong with having nice things but knowing the difference between needs and wants will get you headed in the right direction to being financially responsible rather than reckless. Look, I'm by no means perfect when it comes to spending money (Hi my name is Watu and I'm an impulse shopper), but one thing I have learned is to decipher my needs from my wants. The 3 day rule works. If there is something you really want, wait 3 days. If you feel like you still need it, then buy it; but if that's not the case give yourself a pat on the back, you just saved yourself from buyer’s remorse. Rinse & Repeat. |

| | The summer is here and so are all of the graduations, outdoor concerts, a family events. We tend to be on the go more when the weather is nice, and that can lead to lack of hydration. Our bodies are made up of 75% water which is distributed throughout our cells, blood vessels, and between cells. Our bodies require that our water levels remain at a certain level. If we do not maintain our water levels we become dehydrated. Dehydration can be reversed with an adequate amount of water intake, but can cause symptoms such as dry mouth, less sweating, muscle cramps, and headaches. If untreated for a long period of time, dehydration can cause organ failure, coma, or death. The best way to prevent dehydration is by drinking more water. It is important to know that caffeinated drinks, sugared drinks, and alcohol cause dehydration or help to speed up your dehydration. If you are not a water drinker because of the lack of flavor, try adding real fruit (via a water infuser) to your water and allow it to sit overnight. Your fruit will ferment and give a light flavor for you to be able to drink. If you must purchase your flavored water from the store ensure your water has no artificial chemicals, no food coloring, and no corn syrup. Of course the best way to make sure your hydrating your body is to drink plain water. Get out and enjoy the weather this summer but please don’t forget to stay hydrated! | | |
