Job vacancies: Aggressive Infection Control Professionals Needed.

Elias Tannous

During my preparation for my MBA thesis I read the following statement: “Bank of England has been in a perpetual state of PANIC for over 6.5 years of which dropping interest rates to 0.5% was ….”.

In reflecting and comparing this to Healthcare-associated infection rates, it is very obvious that we do in fact have issues. Our issue is not with infection rates, rather, our issue is with the way we are approaching infection control nowadays and the drivers for change in healthcare systems.

When our indicators of success evolve solely around some chosen indicators (i.e rates on CLABSI, CAUTI, VAE, etc..) and not the actual quality of care provided including other healthcare-acquired infections, these indicators render us oblivious about the real quality of care we provide. The fact is that healthcare associated incidence density rates are more than they are being reported at the moment.

Therefore, more aggressive infection control professionals are needed to:  first understand and acknowledge this fact and second, do something about it; individuals should be equipped with appropriate levels of authority, responsibility, accountability, and qualifications. However, without appropriate level of consciousness, all efforts will be futile; only an appropriate level of consciousness will enable us to measure the truth from falsehood. Discernment is a must.

Feedback from the 2nd Gulf Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (GCCMID 2017), Kingdom of Bahrain.

Special thanks to Dr Hail M. Al-Abdely, Chairman of GCCMID and the organizing committee for all their efforts to make this event very successful and fruitful.  In addition, our host Dr Manaf Al Qahtani and our fellow colleagues in the Kingdom of Bahrain were just another example of the warmth of the Arab hospitality.

During the event there were plenty of opportunities to meet old colleagues and, hopefully, new ones in the field of infectious disease and infection control, and learning from each others' experience.

Moreover, we have had an opportunity for more collaboration and insights which in return will postively affect preventative measures in the region - we will keep you updated on this.

Next GCCMID is planned in Dubai - we will provide you with more information in due course - Stay tuned.
