Governor Ducey Publicly Promises Support for Kinship Families!
Years of AGZA advocacy for more financial support for kinship families has paid off. In his “State of the State | English | Español” address before the Legislature on Monday, January 10, Governor Ducey spoke of kinship families and said:
"Often, it’s grandma or grandpa, an aunt or uncle, who steps up to care for these kids. It can be better for the child, and often cheaper for the state because historically, they haven’t been treated as foster families. More than 6,000 children in Arizona live in these homes — all the evidence you need that you can’t put a price tag on love. So moving forward, these loving extended family members should have the same resources as any other foster family. We’ll make sure of that this year."
The press release from the Governor’s office tells the story and includes a quote from our AZGA Statewide Chair, Ann Nichols.
Legislative Action is Needed to Make theGovernor's Promise Come True
Join us in the THEKINSHIP FAMILY WEEK OF ACTION, a virtual event Monday to Thursday, February 14-17.
Collectively we will deliver Valentines to each and every Legislator on Monday.
Tuesday and Wednesday we are asking our members and friends to contact your Senator and Representatives to briefly tell your story and ask for support for our bills expanding the Kinship Family Fund and Child-0nly TANF. (You will receive training and information about emailing and calling.)
On Thursday, collectively we will send Cookies from Grandma as we have the past few years, with a note thanking them for their support.
The more of us who participate, the greater the impact on the success of our issues!
You can help!
If you have more ideas for this advocacy event — or if you can volunteer to help with a task or with coordination to make it successful — contact Ann Nichols at 520-299-3758 (home phone and message machine) or 520-312-8067 (cell) or email her at annwnichols@gmail.com and put AZGA in the subject line.
