So many great things went on this past quarter we could hardly choose our spotlights. We are excited to be back at our Brown Bag Lunch Program and to have our volunteers back again for another year with our sandwich artists. We have lots of corporate groups scheduled again this year but are always looking for more. The time commitment is from 815am to 10am. If you want to become involved give us a call at 403-528-4313 ext 7. |

Food First Culinary Experience Classes have already begun in our second session this year. This group of individuals are as excited to take in all the information we have for them as we are to give it to them. The Food First Culinary Experience is open to all members of the community. Applications can be found at the Food Bank so give us a call. We work directly with families which allows us to address long-term food sustainability in their lives. The families receive all items they require to cook with while working closely with outreach services to learn a variety of life skills. |

Our Garden Spaces Our garden spaces have closed for the season. We were so happy with the harvest this year seeing how everyone took ownership and cared for our gardens was immensely joyful to experience. Thank you to everyone that helped out this year and to the Horticultural Society for their help in planting. We look forward to planting our gardens again next year would appreciate any extra seed packets you have to help us prepare. |

Kinsmen Club of Medicine Hat The Kinsmen Association, founded in 1920, is a national organization with over 400 Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin clubs across Canada. The association motto is “Serving the Community’s greatest need”. Within District 4 (Alberta) last year, this commitment to serving resulted in 87,097 hours of volunteer time generating $5.6 million in service proceeds! Locally, the Medicine Hat Kinsmen have a long history (since 1938!) of putting energy & resources into making the association motto a guiding principle of the club. The tangible results of the application of this principle are evident throughout the city at various public facilities and parks reflecting the Kin name. The 37 current Kinsmen members continue to apply this principle and have enjoyed a long relationship with the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank. The Food Bank is perceived by the club membership as providing a critically important service within the community. |
|
The most recent example of Kinsmen support for the Food Bank began in 2015 and involves an annual $9,000 donation to off set the cost of processing donated meat. Funding of the Food Bank meat processing and other worthwhile community opportunities by the Kinsmen is achieved through local fund raising that include annual projects like: - Kinsmen Home Lottery (now in it’s 36th year!)
- Car award
- Skate-A-Thon
- Dinner Auction
In closing, the Kinsmen feel honoured to learn they have been recently classified by the Food Bank as a Food Sustainability Champion Donor! The Kinsmen hope there may come a day, at some point in the future, when Food Banks are no longer necessary. In the meantime though, we look forward to being able to continue providing support to the Food Bank through programs like the Meat Processing initiative! 2018-2019 President Tom Simpson |
