A resource for teachers and learners, a quote to inspire, and a question to ponder. It really is the little things we do consistently that lead to great outcomes.

5 Ways to Listen Better

The lecture 5 ways to listen better by Julian Treasure has always been one of my favorite TED Talks. Aside from the insightful information and strategies he provides, Julian's talk is a model example of how to deliver an effective presentation.

"In our louder and louder world, says sound expert Julian Treasure, 'We are losing our listening.' In this short, fascinating talk, Treasure shares five ways to re-tune your ears for conscious listening -- to other people and the world around you."

One of my favorite parts of his TED Talk is his explanation of the listening strategy RASA which is the Sanskrit word for "juice" or "essence." As an acronym, the RASA approach can be applied to be a more effective and empathetic communicator:

  1. Receive - pay attention to the person

  2. Appreciate - provide signals to show you are listening

  3. Summarize - use the word "so" and rephrase what was said

  4. Ask - to make sure you accurately understood

Quote

"It is a mistake to assume that everyone listens like you do: your listening is as unique as your fingerprints, and so is everyone else's."
