BESA Fall Quarter Meetings Here are all the upcoming BESA meetings for this quarter: Thursday, Nov 3rd from 4:15-5:15 pm Thursday, Dec 1st from 4:15-5:15 pm BESA-BMES Mentor-Mentee Program & Grad Panel BESA Outreach is excited to be patterning the local chapter of BMES to bring back two events: our mentor-mentee program and graduate school advice panel! Find more information about this program on this google doc. If you are interested in signing up to be a mentor please sign up via this interest form and we will try to match you with a mentee by 11/4. The graduate school advice panel will be held on 11/4 from 2-3pm in the GBSF auditorium followed by refreshments outside. If you are interested in signing up for this panel please sign up here. You do not need to be a mentor to volunteer for the panel! We do encourage mentors to come to the refreshment session afterwards to meet your mentee in person. Please contact besaoutreach@ucdavis.edu if you have any questions! BESA Student Seminar Series The student seminar series is an amazing opportunity to practice your research presentations, such as your qualifying exam or conference presentation, in a low-key friendly environment. It is a great way to share your research with your colleagues and get valuable feedback from your peers. Black Panther Movie Night Nov. 3 6:00pm North Lawn Walker Hall Graduate Students & Postdocs, please join Graduate Studies for an evening screening of Black Panther on Thursday, November 3rd. Light snacks will be provided. Please be sure to dress warm for this event and bring your own blankets and/or lawn chairs for seating. UC Davis neuroscientist Sergey Stavisky wins 2022 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award UC Davis Health neuroscientist Sergey Stavisky has been selected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to receive the 2022 NIH Director’s New Innovator Award. Congratulations to Dr. Stavisky and UC Davis Neuroprosthetics lab. Read more here - UC News story Congratulations to Dr. Alba Alfonso-Garcia on being awarded an R21 grant from the NIH Read more here Grad student Abby Niesen received the Lurie Graduate Student Award (internal UCD fellowship). Congratulations Abby! Grad student Valerie Porter was awarded the Best Poster Award for her work titled: “Fully Automated Whole Brain Segmentation from T2-weighted MRI Brain Scans of Rats Using the U-Net Neural Network” at the World Molecular Imaging Congress Annual Meeting held from Sept 28-Oct 1, 2022 in Miami Beach, FL. She also won the UC Davis Graduate Student Association Travel Fellowship and co-moderated an oral session at the meeting on novel molecular imaging technologies. Grad student Alita D Almeida won the prestigious NIH Travel award and the Graduate Student Association Travel Fellowship for presenting her work titled: “Quantitative T2 mapping as a biomarker of neuropathology resulting from acute organophosphate intoxication in a rat model” at the World Molecular Imaging Congress Annual Meeting held from Sept 28-Oct 1, 2022 in Miami Beach, FL. She also won the Women in Molecular Imaging Network (WIMIN) Scholar Research award given to individuals who were the first author of meritorious scientific abstracts at the conference. |

Career Development Seminar series, journal clubs, workshops, conferences, and jobs Writing Partner Program The University Writing Program promotes excellence in written communication among UC Davis students and faculty and emphasizes the importance of writing in the larger community. We help undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines to master the writing skills they need to succeed as academics, professionals, and citizens. Deadline to register for the 2022-23 Writing Partner Program and for the Graduate Certificate in Writing Across the Curriculum. Writing Consultations for Graduate Students & Postdocs Schedule a writing consultation with one of our Graduate Writing Fellows! Fellows offer one-on-one 40-minute writing consultations with enrolled grad students and postdocs. Consultations offer you the opportunity to engage in a conversation about your writing at any stage of the writing process in a low-stakes, low-stress environment with a peer. While we are not a proofreading or editing service, we are happy to identify patterns of error in writing and help you learn about resources to improve grammar. Sign up for a consultation here!
