With the proliferation of data, Data Science has become a critical function in Tech, as well as in data intensive departments of non-Tech industries (eg: Supply Chain, Operations, Inventory Management, etc.).
In this edition, we talk to Sean Taylor (@seanjtaylor on Twitter), Former Data Science Manager at Lyft and Facebook, on how he has built a successful career in this space. Some of the topics that Sean touches upon include (full interview):
- How having a vast network on Twitter has helped him (he has ~44K followers on Twitter)
How working openly and sharing things that are still "Work in progress" has been a contributor to building this network and producing a better output
Types of projects that he has worked on as a Data Scientist
How candidates can try to evaluate whether an opportunity is meaty enough
Ways to assess how empowered the function is inside the company, (even though it's not easy!)
An excerpt from the discussion:
"I do think that working openly, ie, talking about what I'm doing and thinking about, whether that's on Twitter or within the companies I've worked in - I’ve found that to be a really valuable tool. Some people try to take their work and keep it within their own brain and or with a couple of other people. However, I find that for the kind of work we do, being in discussions about it constantly, and being really curious about how other people would think about it has been a really valuable tool for me."
