Happening Colombo

Issue 24

08 July

Welcome to this week's update on Colombo's meal deals, food delivery and events.

Well the big news: at last, restaurants are opening up again!  Most are also serving drinks. They are restricted to 25% of capacity, so it's a good idea to call ahead and book a table. So far only a few have restarted their dine-in Executive Lunch offers or happy hours, probably because of the capacity limits, but there are some and we are updating the site as we hear of them. There's a few new meal offers for delivery too and we are adding those to our Offers page.

There's also a couple of live music sessions restarted - only solo musicians and duos so far but it's a start, and we have restarted the Music page. It's a bit sparse at the moment but give it a little time!

We've been enjoying the livestreams over the past few weeks. One or two of those are wrapping up but hopefully some might continue. We'll keep listing what we find on our diary page. We also add a few international online events that might be of interest such as comedy, fashion, shows and travel. We would love to hear what interests you.

Keep Safe and Stay Well.

What's New this week?

Breakfast and Lunch

So we're a little less reliant on deliveries now. But getting a good start to the day can't hurt and, if you still want a breakfast delivered, Tea Avenue have introduced a full cooked breakfast, which is available for delivery. If you prefer something lighter and sweeter, they also offer pancakes.

The Grill in Flower Road have introduced an Executive Lunch offer with a choice of barbecue set meals. These range from Rs690 to Rs990 and are available for dine-in, takeaway or delivery.

Cheese Heads, in One Galle Face, are known for their cheeseburgers but they have a selection of Mac and Cheese dishes as well: with smoked chicken, with chicken kochchi sausage, or vegetarian. These are priced at Rs650 except the vegetarian which is at Rs550 and, for a limited time, they have a "buy one, get one free" offer.

Fish & Chips Colombo are reopening from Thursday 8th July in Welawatte from 12pm to 10pm. Due to the capacity limit, they request advance reservations. Their "Sharing Box", a double portion of fish and chip for two people to share, priced at Rs2000, will be available over the weekend, from Friday to Sunday.

Meal Deals

High Tea and Dinner:

There's another high tea available, this one from t-Lounge by Dilmah. This has six savouries including four sandwiches; six sweets and tea. There's two portions of each, and it is all priced at Rs3,200 for two people.

If you like tacos, but you can't find a place that does them just right, then we have the solution for you: Cafe Kumbuk. They will supply all the ingredients that you need to make 4 or 6 perfect tacos; all you have to do is put them together. So if you make these up and they're still not right, there is only one person left to blame!

Thai Heritage Truck have an offer for two red chicken curry combo meals priced at Rs1100. The curry comes with fried rice, devilled kangkung, fried egg and chilli paste.

Want a nice, grilled family meal but don't want to have to cook? Country Kitchen might be the solution. They offer grilled chicken or pork platters,  Rs3,500 for chicken or Rs4,000 for pork, which come with accompaniments, enough to feed 2 or 3 people. You just have to order in advance.

Live Music and DJs

It's great to see some live music restarting this week. So far it is just solo artists and duos but hopefully it won't be long before full bands are back on stage.

Sam Day led the restart on Wednesday evening at Playtrix and will be followed this Friday by Dillon Manuel, playing at 8pm prior to the start of Ladies' Night.

Asylum is also restarting their popular Friday evening music, this week with an acoustic set from a couple of members of regulars, Warehouse Project. This starts at 7pm.

The OIC band have been holding a regular livestream on Friday evenings and plan to continue that this week, with music and chat. This is of course online and starts at 7pm.

Another online event of interest, a talk and discussion about the History of Pop Music  through the 20th Century. This online event is on Friday at 3.30pm.

On Saturday night, Sunday morning there is a livestream tribute to legendary rock singer Ronnie James Dio. This starts at 2.30am and features a number of former bandmates such as Tony Iommi and Vinny Appice and other musicians. It is charged, in support of the Dio Cancer Fund.
