JUSTICE, SOVEREIGNTY & HOME-BREWED BOOZE

Peace beautiful beings!

2020 continues to blow our minds - entrenched systems are being questioned and crumbling. From extractive consumerism to racist structures, people are speaking out and we are damn glad to hear the strength of this united voice. We are doing our own work for the Black Lives Matters movement by reading the history, signing petitions, talking to the older generation, listening to the stories of our brothers and sisters of color and reflecting within. We are sharing anti-racism resources here, because the truth is, racist systems are deeply entrenched here in Indian society too. We invite you to also do the work. Let 2020 be the year we collectively dismantle white supremacy!

Here in Panchgani, monsoon rains are settling in. We're planting more trees (cinnamon, jambul, coffee, shatavari, brahmi, amla, adulsa) and stacking cow dung and dried leaves on the garden beds. Overlooked rhizomes from last years' turmeric harvest are resprouting all over the farm, sending slender rolls of vivid green bursting through the mulch. The farm is lush and fertile after summer's long dry spell. Our 'radical self reliance' online workshops are continually running - check out our June workshops!

In this second newsletter, we are covering garlic brined okra, homemade alcoholic ginger beer, seed sovereignty, anti-racism and the launch of our latest co-created endeavor - an environmental film festival.

In eternal solidarity with all indigenous & peoples of color,

Laura and Kunal Khanna

Black Lives Matter. Period. We are well overdue to dismantle white supremacy in the USA & abroad and 'light' supremacy in India. It will take all of us. Get educated, pay attention, take a stand for what is right!

Anti-Racism Resources

We've been brewing heaps of ginger beer over here! It's helping with the lockdown coping ;) This is not the fizzy family drink we teach in our 'Easy Home Ferments' workshop, this is one is alcoholic. And strong too! Turns out is easier than we could have imagined. You're welcome!

Garlicky brined okra is our new favorite food! It's so crazy delicious we had to share the recipe. Stuff okra (whole!) into a clean jar and shove garlic cloves in between. Pour over a brine with 5% salt (5% the weight of water) and weigh down so all the okra is covered with liquid. Ferment for 4-5 days and enjoy! Once ready, fridge it for a long shelf life.

Alongside our friends at NOCT, we've launched Panchgani's first film festival. ALT EFF will premier in October with an exclusive focus on environmental films. We are hiring for several positions, film submissions are open and we're seeking funding. It's all happening! If this sparks your interest, write to us.

Growing native seeds (meaning non-hybrid, non-GMO) is a damn hopeful form of activism. Seed laws around the world threaten farmers' rights to freely save and share seed. Join this quiet revolution and learn to save you own seed!

Ah you read all the way through :) As a bonus, check our Laura's playlist of cruisey beats for cooking, gardening or hanging in the park.

Peace, love and vegetables, friends! We hope you send this around to other earthly-minded people so they can sign up to receive hot-off-the-press practical knowledge each month.
