Parrotlet Periodical - tips and tricks for your flying family member...

Hello Parrotlet Lovers!

I hope that this communication finds you happy and healthy. I wanted to take this opportunity to reconnect and remind you about several critical factors in the care of your companion parrotlet.

  • Although tap water is satisfactory for your parrotlet's drinking water, be sure to let it sit in an open container for a 24 hour period prior to using it. This allows the chlorine, which is not good or your pet, to evaporate, while leaving the minerals that are beneficial.

  • A great way to provide vegetables for your parrotlet is to keep a bag of frozen veggies on hand. You can thaw the vegetables, (corn, peas, green beans, lima beans, etc.), under warm running water to and then mash up with a fork. If your p'let doesn't like to try new things, try sprinkling with millet pieces to catch their attention.

  • Remember, onions are toxic for parrotlets!!!!

  •  When adding branches and perches to your parrotlets environment, be sure to clean them with a disinfectant prior to placing it in your bird's area. I often use a 30% bleach to 70% water solution for scrubbing them down. I then rinse the article thoroughly with water to remove any lingering bleach residue. You can also use a dishwasher for cleaning branches and perches if the item will fit. Cleaning perches and branches that you have collected outdoors is important due to the possible exposure to pesticides and other toxic chemicals.

I wish the absolute best for you and your companion parrotlet!
