THE QUERY TRENCHES Yes, I have entered the hallowed halls...erm trenches of querying. They're just as tiresome and sweaty (and slightly smelly) as you've heard. But it's cool to be at this step in the process regardless. I'm planning on sending out batch #2 this week, so keep your fingers crossed! With that, depending on the feedback I get from this round, I'm planning on doing another round of revisions on The Promise of Shattered Stars late summer/early fall. When those are finished, I will be looking to do another round of betas! If you'd be interested in some beta reading in the fall, please reply to this email or drop me a line on my Contact page. If you've peeked at my updated Books page recently, you've noticed a new addition...Project Melodies! Today, you get a sneak peek of my new aesthetic. The working pitch is also below (& it's also on the website). The idea came to me as I listened to Bastille's "Bad Decisions." (Bastille is one of my favorite bands btw...saw them in concert, too! Dan ran through the crowd right past me. He high-fived everyone...except me. I'm still cheesed...ahem anyway). This novel is a YA Fantasy in more of the grimdark subset of the genre. |

I really wanted the darkness and grit to show through for this high fantasy world. Think a cleaner version of Game of Thrones. I'm writing it as a standalone...but it definitely has series potential. My goal is to finish draft #1 by Sep 30! Pitch: After her forbidden magic kills her foster parents, an ex-princess turned criminal, Gwen, must flee town with her brother to make a new life; but when her brother wants to reclaim his stolen throne, Gwen must harness her powers before she loses the only family she has left. |

"Fun" Reading: I'm still reading Kingdom of Copper. It is AWESOME. So awesome I'm trying to drag it out on purpose. I've heard it ends on quite the cliff hanger...and the next one comes out JUNE 30th. I have to limit myself to a chapter like every other day. It's difficult to do, ha. I'm also reading Half a King by Joe Abercrombie. I started it for research into the grimdark genre, and I've heard a whole lot about his adult trilogy (First Law). Shout-out to Cam for recommending this read when I brought up my idea. I love the book soooo much, too! I've also tabbed it so I can study how Abercrombie has set up each beat (Save the Cat). He has yet to disappoint. |
