Only one week to go! Buy tickets now for Strings Amore on Thursday 8 September

Presented by Chamber Music New Zealand, in partnership with ACAS, string quintet Strings Amore will be led by the complicated but beautiful “viola d’amore" in a performance that features pieces by Telemann, Bach, Vivaldi, and Graupner.

One of the rarest, sweetest instruments played in Baroque chamber music, it brings dramatic highlights to this much-anticipated Arrowtown concert. There are only four such instruments in New Zealand – such is its rarity, and its difficulty to master.

A viola has four strings and is pitched slightly lower than a violin. However, the viola d’amore, first made in the seventeenth century, has fourteen strings in two layers of seven. The top layer is played by the musician’s bow, while the seven underneath resonate the played notes on “sympathetic” strings.

Strings Amore brings together Donald Maurice (viola d’amore), Martin Riseley (violin), Rupa Maitra (violin), Sophia Acheson (viola), Margaret Guldborg (cello) in a programme that showcases the viola d’amore.

With this rare instrument, the audience can anticipate a sweet and gentle sound where the underlying sympathetic strings create an extra resonance that seems like a portable cathedral acoustic.

In this informal 1.5-hour session we will be joined by artist and tutor Megan Huffadine who will be offering feedback and encouragement around any aspects of your work that you desire to discuss.

Bring along any work that you want feedback on, and Megan will give some fresh perspective and suggest directions to pursue. Megan will also bring along and critique some of her own work. We will also have a few of our experienced members available for comments and help.

Megan has tutored art making for many years. Her ability to see and gently guide in the right direction is a rare gift that has been hugely appreciated by all her students.

More Great Events!

Just five weeks to go before the At the World's Edge Festival 2022! Take your place at the edge of the world. With six festival programmes, free Queenstown events, and AWE community performances, there’s something for everyone in the heart of the Southern Alps from 8-21 October 2022.

Launched last October within our stunning Central Lakes region, the 2022 programme has more performances, more free events and even more reasons to be a part of this annual chamber music festival.

In Wānaka, Cromwell and Queenstown from 8-21 October, this year’s festival boasts an impressive line-up of artists from Poland, UK, Estonia, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. With solos and duos through to sextets and octets, six thematically interlinked programmes will explore the roles solitude and togetherness play in the creative process.

Gareth Farr is the AWE 2022 Composer in Residence with six of his chamber works woven through the performances, in addition to a new commission for premiere by Artistic Director Benjamin Baker and Polish cellist Maciej Kułakowski.

Performed in three acoustically gorgeous locations, all amidst the stunning landscapes of the Central Lakes region, there is much to love about AWE. It’s simply not to be missed.
