 2021 Update #5

1.  Our Planning & Environment Court challenge: The Beachfront

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS!

Decision pending: The issues are complex and we appreciate the in-depth consideration that is being undertaken.  His Honour, Judge Long, told the court in November 2020 that he would take time to review the law and the evidence and deliver his decision at a later date after completing his deliberations.

If you have questions about the legal challenge, our website has more information where you can also access copies of the key documents lodged with the Court:

2.  The Beachfront - in the meantime

No further changes since Council approved the Developers' Operational Works Application (with approval conditions) for The Beachfront apartment building, 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙖 𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝘾𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣!

You can view the approval document using this link: click HERE for the link to Council's website to open the document.  This approval document includes multiple compliance conditions, including Erosion and Sediment Control plans, management of the Acid Sulphate Soil, Lighting restrictions (turtle season), Monitoring of Subterranean Water Supply (specifically for Buddina Community Garden) and additional permits.

3. Not everyone uses Social Media

For our supporters who prefer not to reference Facebook, we sometimes share articles on that platform which we think are relevant to our beachside community. Last month the link to our "swamp" story about Buddina was altered - Click HERE to access the article from SC News:

  • Did you know Buddina was built on reclaimed swamp?  Houses, in this swamp in the middle of nowhere? You must be mad!  There are great photos included in this article.

Here are a couple more stories that we shared during August - interesting reads:

  • You may have heard the ‘moon wobble’ will intensify coastal floods.  Click HERE to access this article from The Conversation
  • How high above sea level am I?’ If you’ve googled this, you’re likely asking the wrong question — an expert explains.  Click HERE to access this article from The Conversation
  • Forget massive seawalls, coastal wetlands offer the best storm protection money can buy!   Click HERE to access this article published in The Conversation

We have also shared the website links to several local development applications recently submitted to Council, including:

MCU21/0254:  81 Lapoinya Cres WARANA - Dual Occupancy

MCU21/0284:  14 Palkana Dr WARANA - Dual Occupancy

MCU21/0290:  50 Malinya Drive BUDDINA - Dual Occupancy

MCU21/0292:    4 Bandalong St BUDDINA - Dual Occupancy

MCU21/0296:   28 Undara Ave BUDDINA - Dual Occupancy

To view all development applications lodged, not yet approved, use this link

https://developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Home/AddressSearch

and then enter Buddina or Warana (or any suburb) into the search criteria to narrow the selection to your locality, then review the “Application Documents” for the selected application of interest.

4.  Mass Transit

Council Public Consultation

Council have updated their Mass Transit website relating to the consultation process which they are currently analysing the community’s views, ideas and opinions. They state:  “As you can imagine, with many hundreds of thousands of words submitted, this will take some time to ensure we correctly understand, analyse and deliver an accurate reflection of our community’s feedback.”  Click HERE to access the Council updates.

What can you do now?

While we wait for Council to disclose the outcome of their community consultation process, we are encouraging everyone to sign one State Government petition and one Federal Government petition. It only takes 1 or 2 minutes to sign each one, thanks.

Click HERE to sign MTAG's State petition (closing 30 August)

Click HERE to sign Andrew Wallace's Federal Petition (closing date TBA)

Position Statement - what is Friends of Buddina stance this project?

Friends of Buddina believe that the Council's Draft Options Analysis report, in its current form, should NOT progress to the next stage of formalising the Business Case. The underlying assumptions of the recommendations and the preferred options in that report need to be revised.

Friends of Buddina believe that Council's preferred options are the WRONG MODES along the WRONG ROUTE with an unacceptable weighting bias on 'land use' (building height and density increases with multi-storey apartments).  Overall, this mass transit proposal falls short of what the Sunshine Coast needs in a transport plan.  Click HERE to view our full Position Statement which was submitted to Council.
