Introducing: Kōkua Hands, Kōkua Minds! This pilot project, made possible through partnership with Vibrant Hawaiʻi, offers an opportunity to give back to the land, connect with our community, and learn mindfulness and coping skills. Through the project, our hope is for participants to cultivate mental health wellness and a sense of kuleana (responsibility). The service tasks range from picking up trash to planting and weeding, depending on the site. Grounding practices will be infused throughout the project. Want to join? Call 617-543-8065 to reserve a spot. |

Nature Mandalas Reaching into the morning sun and rooting our feet into the ground. This is how we began our mandala workshop with an energizing stretch led by Mona, co-founder of Root & Rise, with residents and staff from CARE Hawaiʻi’s crisis shelter. |
After learning about the universality and symbolism of mandalas across time, culture, and place, the group chose to make a single, collective mandala to build social cohesion and togetherness. They arranged endemic hāpuʻu ferns and maʻo hau hele hibiscus flowers, hefty ʻulu (breadfruit) leaves, fragrant herbs like catnip, basil, and oregano, and a single, brilliant ginger blossom at the center. Richard quietly took the lead, helping to create shape and symmetry. Others took time to mindfully fill in the gaps. And Sarah added finishing touches of rose and gardenia petals. The final mandala – a radiant, impermanent masterpiece – reminded participants that moments in life are fleeting, and the only constant in this world is change – an important insight as many people transition from crisis to stability. Mahalo to Deirdre and CARE Hawaiʻi staff for supporting this activity. |
