A Warm message of Happy New Year to you, As I entered Minnesota's winter a few months ago and looked forward to this new year, I set the intention of sharing my work more widely and exhibiting on an increasingly national scale. This would involve expanding the Calls for Art that I applied for and in most cases would involve paying an upfront fee in order to be considered. I got excited and applied for two such shows that seemed like a good match for my willow art--one in the state of Virginia and one in New York City. This newsletter shares the results of stepping out in this way. As we are in a new year, may growth come from mistakes made. Warmly, Martha |

NYC Exhibit Tenuous Threads Part One: January 24 - February 11, 2023 Part Two: February 14 - March 4, 2023 |
I am thrilled to be traveling to Manhattan in New York City to attend the January 26, 2023 opening reception for Tenuous Threads: Contemporary work incorporating Textiles, Fibers, Threads & Mixed Media !! It is such an honor to have my sculpture Bespoked juried into this national exhibition by Juror Patricia Miranda. I learned that there were 1029 submissions and initially the juror was allowed to pick only 40 pieces of artwork, but finding this a nearly impossible task, the gallery graciously expanded the selection to include 80 pieces and created a consecutive Part One (my artwork appears here) and Part Two. Atlantic Gallery, located in the historic Landmark Arts Building in the Chelsea arts district NYC, invites the public to this exhibit that explores the following theme: All of life is connected through networks, systems, fibers, and webs. Communication (visual, verbal, electrical, chemical, and kinetic) enables an exchange of information amongst all life forms. Tenuous Threads alludes to the delicate lines that bring us together and sets us apart; that joins us yet repels us. |

Virginia Exhibit Fibers of Nature February 11 - April 1, 2023 |
Two of my newest pieces of willow art are traveling to the state of Virginia for this Fibers of Nature juried exhibit! Exhibit description: As two different substances that constantly appear in everyday life, both wood and fiber can be transformed from raw material into a multiplicity of functional pieces or fine art. The fibers of nature appear in many forms, including all forms of wood, grapevine, sweetgrass, hair, cotton, silk, hemp, wool, linen, paper, and more. The intent of this group exhibition is to highlight the beauty that is manifested in these different forms, and to illustrate how artists are able to weave, sculpt, and imagine these fibers into art. |

Virtual Exhibit! Nourish and Flourish Photovoice |
What does it mean to be "healthy"? Health can mean something different to everyone. We all come from different backgrounds and experiences. Many of us have different needs to be cared for in different ways. This virtual exhibit shares the common themes found when the University of Minnesota Extension partnered with various Community Support Programs throughout Hennepin County and asked the question, “What impacts your health?” As you click the button below to flip through photos and read each section, learn about all the different ways others stay healthy. I have 5 photographs and quotes featured in the following sections: Community (1), Nature (2) and Spirituality (2). |

Upcoming Exhibit! REVOLUTIONARY: The Feminine Perspective Beyond 50 February 15 - March 25, 2023 |
One of my sculptures will be on view alongside the other powerhouse artists in this REVOLUTIONARY exhibit! “Feminine artists who continue their journey for a lifetime, despite being undermined by the larger arts community, speaks to their tenacity and strength. Their will to overcome, to continue to create beauty and inspire our souls, this is what I want to showcase.” - Christi Furnas, Curator The feminine perspective has an unsurpassable value that has historically been overlooked, discarded, and ultimately not equally represented in the art world. In addition, female artists experience significant ongoing disparities and invisibility as they age, creating a different level of truth during their lifetime. A part of our society’s soul has been left with a void due to gender bias and ageism. Revolutionary stands up against this to advocate for change, displaying artwork and voices from artists who have remained committed to their artistic practice, in face of such challenges. Women, femmes, nonbinary, and trans artists included. All work was created after the artist’s fiftieth birthday. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events: Opening Reception: Friday, February 17, 6-8 pm Artist Talk: Wednesday, March 8, 6:30 - 8 pm |
