October Newsletter

Dear MMN Participant,

We have a new cooking video for you from Jessica Weiss, a long time friend of the Needham Community Farm. In her 15 minute video, Jessica prepares Butternut Squash Soup. Jessica roasts the squash as a first step, to give the soup extra depth. Yum! We have the recipe for you here. Happy fall cooking!

Needham Restaurants Reviewed for Meatless Entrées

Meatless Monday Needham reviewed the online menus for restaurants in Needham that offer full service dinner menus. The review took place in the summer of 2021. We looked at whether each restaurant used vegetarian and/or vegan symbols and at their meatless entrée offerings.

Some tips for eating out meatless in Needham:

  • Menus change! Check websites for current menus.
  • Although we are called Meatless Monday, any day of the week is fine. Several restaurants are closed on Monday, check before you go.
  • Don’t hesitate to work with your server to determine if an interesting dish could be made meatless or ask if any off-menu meatless dishes are available.

Note that some restaurants had very large menus with protein options such as tofu, while others had a small menu with one or two meatless options among the limited entrées. Of the 16 restaurants we included,

  • All had websites with online menus.
  • Seven included symbols on the menu for Vegetarian and/or Vegan.
  • All had several meatless appetizers, salads and sides on the menu.
  • In general, the Asian restaurants did not include symbols, but had “Vegetable” sections on their menus. Masala Art, which does include symbols, is an exception.

WEB RESOURCES

Last month the New York Times ran an interesting article, “Plant-Based Foods Expand, With Consumers Hungry for More”, on the rise of plant-based eating in the United States. The food entrepreneurs interviewed say that they are courting people who consider themselves flexitarians (semi-vegetarians) and vegan-curious. Meatless options are growing!
