Rescue + Rehabilitate + Advocate

JULY Newsletter

Welcome to our monthly newsletter. We appreciate you taking the time to read this. Our goal is to share pictures, videos and stories of our rescued farm animals and to provide an update on what's happening at the sanctuary, including progress on projects aided by your donations.

But we realize the stories we tell are of the lucky ones and struggle with the grim reality that there are millions of farm animals caught in a cruel industry. Most will live their entire life in total confinement, never knowing their parents, where males are considered "throwaways" and will die miserably without anyone ever knowing that they lived.

This is WHY WE RESCUE but our hope is that one day we won't have to.

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT CHICKENS:

Chickens are inquisitive, interesting animals who are as intelligent as mammals such as cats, dogs, and even some primates. They are very social and like to spend their days together, scratching for food, taking dust baths, roosting in trees, and lying in the sun.

Chickens can get airborne enough to make it over a fence or into a tree.

Chickens can run at 9 MPH.

They take dust baths. This involves fluffing up their feathers with some dirt and using it to clean their bodies. It scrubs off dead skin cells and gets rid of oil buildup. This all helps to keep their feathers fresh and clean.

There are dozens of chicken breeds, such as the Dutch bantam, leghorn and Rhode Island red.

Although many people think chickens are colorblind, they are not. Chickens actually have great vision – better eyesight than you.

Chickens are very vocal creatures, and they communicate with each other frequently. They crow and chirp in a range of 30 meaningful vocalizations. Chickens are rarely quiet for long unless they are sleeping.

We currently have 3 families of chickens at HFS, totaling 43 chickens. The 3 families are headed by Tom Sawyer, Mango & Raspberry.

Our chickens have the freedom to walk, dustbathe, perch, nest and express other natural behaviors essential to their well-being.

In the United States 9 billion chickens are killed each year for their meat and 305 million are used for their eggs.

Meet a few of our family members

This is Isabel and Hazel!

Isabel and Hazel are mother and daughter and unlike most farm animals will have the opportunity to know, love and live out their lives together.

They were adopted from a family that was downsizing their goat crew and were hoping to avoid sending them to auction.

Although they are tiny is size, they are big in personality and mischief.  They can be seen laying together on sunny days but seek shelter on rainy or snowy days. They are extremely affectionate, and will cozy up to you for hours pending head scratches. And they LOVE peanuts in the shell. When handing out treats they will be front and center.

It's so heartwarming to see this mother/ daughter duo living their best life possible, together.

This is PeeWee!

PeeWee arrived at HFS in December 2016 at 18 months old. He came from a home in Portland, OR. He grew up with his human family and dog friend. The family was moving to Texas and it was decided that PeeWee would not make the move with them.

He found a home at HFS. Due to lack of exercise and really slippery wood floors in the house, he arrived overweight and had overgrown hooves. After lots of exercise and diligent vet care, PeeWee is now healthy!

He is a very sweet boy that loves to nap, eat and roll over for belly rubs. He has the sweetest disposition.

He is now 6 years old and shows no signs of slowing down.  We love you, PeeWee!

WHERE YOUR DONATION GOES!

Your donations purchased this large Chicken Coop to house our courtyard chicken family of 12.

It has multiple nesting boxes, a wide open floor plan, roosting bar, 2 vents to let air flow through and even windows that open for fresh air on hot evenings.

This coop provides our courtyard chickens a place to sleep at night, safely! And a place to eat, drink water and nest during the day.

The chickens of Harmony Farm Sanctuary thank you for your donations!

Fire Preparedness & what that means to the rescued farm animals at HFS

*UPDATE*

With fire season already underway in Central Oregon,  planning for FIRE SAFETY & EVACUTION at Harmony Farm Sanctuary CONTINUES!

Aside from regular preventative measures taken for fire safety for each structure at the sanctuary, a strategy for evacuating 130 animal residents with a safe place to bring them is of utmost importance!

We started by inviting the PET EVACUATION TEAM to our sanctuary to help us create our plan. We are implementing this plan by

purchasing 6 fire extinguishers and multiple 100 FT hoses. We continue to fundraise for a generator, crates to transport smaller rescued animals, and a car port to house our hay.

We CANNOT be too prepared. 2020 was a devastating fire season in Oregon with over 1 million acres burned, almost double the 10 year average of 557,000 acres. And drought this year is fueling potential for an above-average fire season.

The fire safety and evacuation items will cost approximately $15,000.

We have raised $3,570 in fundraising dollars and a large horse trailer has been provided on loan and is on property valued at $8,000.

Please help us raise the remaining amount of $3,430 by making a donation to our fire preparedness fund!
